Poppy not eating!!!

I've been away for a week looking after my little granddaughter in Finland. On Saturday OH called me to say Poppy had diarrhea and had refused her afternoon meal. She wouldn't eat anything at all yesterday either - and most worryingly would not drink anything. I told him to try to get her to lick some water off his fingers, which she did do. My flight back was on Sunday and I got home around 8pm, and Poppy finally had a small drink of water. This morning she has drunk more water, but still has not eaten anything. We have been to the vet, and she has had an antibiotic injection, a painkiller, and a relaxant. She's conked out now in her bed by me. The vet thinks she is going to be ok and that she will probably want to have something to eat by this afternoon, but we should bring her back tomorrow if not, and at any rate we have to take her back in on Wednesday to check she is ok, and another injection.

When OH first told me she wasn't eating I thought 'uh oh, this is it', because I have never known her refuse food before. Not drinking was actually more worrying, but OH did not think she needed to go to the emergency vet on Sunday because she seemed ok in herself, with bright eyes and not that awful sunken look they get when very sick. I was so relieved when she licked some water off my hand and then actually had a little drink! She'll be 13 in a couple of weeks, but she's a tough old bird. Fingers crossed!!!

I'm sorry she's not too well. It's hard when they get to this age. You've done all you can for the moment but things may need further investigations. Hopefully she'll pick up and start to eat and drink.❤

They can make us worry don't they.....I understand what you are going through. With Euan we have been there too. Not even wanted to stand up, not eating an apple which was his favorit....
Sending lambies!!

How worrying! I’m so pleased she’s had a drink and something to eat. She must’ve been feeling awful. Hopefully just a bug that will pass out. Thinking of you both. xxx

Thanks all, Poppy seems brighter this morning, ate some breakfast and had a drink and went out for a little toddle and sniff in the woods with me. She hasn't done a poo now since Saturday, though she is emitting the most disgusting stinky farts! And right now she is begging because I am eating a slice of pizza for lunch, so I am guessing she is on the mend :dug:

Merlin now seems to have it - he has had diarrhea since yesterday, but he seems fine in himself and is eating and drinking normally.

So Poppy has done a couple of poos, which were on the soft side of normal, and is drinking a bit (she never drinks a lot) and weeing normally. She is still not eating properly though - this morning she ate some of the sensitive diet kibble, but left the soft dog food and rice, which she normally inhales. In herself she seems ok, though I think she feels a bit nauseous some of the time - she seems hungry, but then doesn't want all her food. She pulls her mouth up a bit at the sides as though she feels sick - do you know what I mean? I took her back to the vet, who gave her a second antibiotic injection and something for the nausea, and we're going back again on Friday morning. She had a full blood test done in December, which was normal, and the vet doesn't feel it is necessary to repeat it at this stage; hopefully it really is just a stomach bug that has hit her harder than Merls because of her age.

I am a bit concerned, but not overly so at this stage. :|

I remember when Sam had some sort of tummy bug and refused food for days , even water too . It is so worrying especially with dogs who usually hoover up food with relish . It did seem like an age before Sams appetite fully returned but it was probably only a few days . I hope that dear Poppy improves very soon , hugs for you Karen xx

Poppy continues to improve, though she still only wants to eat the special sensitive diet kibble. She is hungry for that though! She went for a 30 minute walk with Merlin and me this morning. One more vet visit tomorrow, and hopefully she will be ok by the weekend. Phew!
