Poppy

Poppy is doing a little better at present. We realized that her pain medication was making her sick, so we have stopped giving her that, and since then she has been eating better and able to keep food down. She is alert and interested in her surroundings, and very very happy that OH is back home. Her back legs are a bit wobbly and she sometimes drags her back feet a little if she is tired. That said, today she walked down the road with me about 100 meters to my friend's house and we sat out in the garden with her, then back home for a bit of cooked chicken and some mince (this dog gets better food than many people!). She hasn't done a poo for two days, so I am hoping this little walk will get things moving, so to speak.

We are just taking each day as it comes, and are very grateful that we have this time with our dear girl; it feels like a precious and unexpected gift, seeing as I thought she was going to die a few days ago.

That’s so lovely hear. ❤

I find that psyllium husks are a great way to get a nice poo! I used to give it to Snowie with his veg mixture, with lots of water in the mix (it absorbs a lot of water, so it’s not runny), and it guaranteed a great poo every time! I haven’t bought more, but had it then because the gastroenterologist I went to (for my first (and still only) colonoscopy—I’d reached the age when it was recommended!) said everyone should take psyllium husks, he said something about it encourages a good microbiome. So, of course Snowie got it, too.

Not sure how enthusiastic Poppy will be to eat it. But if she’s constipated, it’s a good option. Perhaps mixed up with roast chicken. You only need a small amount to have a big effect!

It's been a very up and down few days!! Friday and Saturday were very good, with even a little walk to the woods. But on Sunday morning Pops seemed weak and wobbly, and yet needed to go out every twenty minutes and kept trying to pee. We called our vet, who met us at the surgery (luckily just a couple of minutes drive from our house) - Poppy has a UTI, so is now on antibiotics. Yesterday was a really bad day whereby she really didn't want to do anything other than lie in her bed by the heater and we were beginning to think that she wasn't going to recover, but to our surprise she was up and wagging her tail this morning, has eaten plenty of food, played a little game with her dummy in the garden, and has even been in the car with me to a field where she could sniff around to her heart's content for 15 minutes or so. Currently she is hanging out in the kitchen 'helping' OH get supper ready. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?? At any rate, we are just taking this one day at a time, and are glad for the days where our sweet girl is bright and happy.
