Rural Gundog Theft on the Increase

Yes, it makes you wonder what kind of a person buys a full grown gundog without checking the chipping. They will have to take it to the vet at some point. Maybe a lot of these dogs are being shipped overseas. Maybe tattooing is the way forward. x

Unfortunately near me there have been several dog thefts recently, and not only gundog breeds. Some have been taken from gardens and others lured away when out on a walk 😢. There have recently been 3 men seen and approaching owners and asking lots of questions about their dogs and trying to lure the dogs from owners. It makes me mad 😡

One would think that with micro chipping dog’s dog theft would decline.
In southern Spain they just cut out the chips.

My neighbour had his little spaniel stolen and he was distraught. I felt so badly for him, but at the same time wanted to smack him. Why oh why leave a purebred intact gundog visibly alone in your garden? That was two years ago and I still think about what likely happened to him.

My biggest fear with Duncan (purebred Rottie) was that he'd be stolen and used in fighting as a bait dog. I never left him out anywhere by himself. By the time Brogan came along, he was was clearly not a purebred plus dogfighting in California had moved on to primarily pit bulls. Not that made things any better as by then I had pit bull Mama Jodhi.

For me, losing a dog to theft would be exponentially worse than having them die. My imagination is just too active. :(

As an aside, it did help the other neighbourhood dogs as people started keeping them indoors. For example other neighbours have a beautiful German shepherd and used to leave her in the front garden when they were at work. You could pet her through the fence, which also meant anyone could do anything else through the fence. I was always worried about her. After the spaniel was stolen, the GSD is always kept in the house while the family is at work.

It happens round here. Intact males and females are kept and bred from. Litter after litter none reg pedigrees or crosses no questions asked but cheap. When the bitches can have no more they get dumped and then their chips get read and they sometimes get home 4 or 5 years later with massive health problems having had multiple litters. Chips get cut out. Dogs get moved around.

I'd been wondering about the proliferation of "stolen" dog posts that those of you who are on FB are sharing. How are all these dogs getting stolen? Nobody deserves to have a dog stolen out of their garden, but given how common dog theft seems to be in the UK you'd think that people would stop leaving their dogs outside when they're not home. The thought that people are nicking dogs when they're out on walks is just *chills*

I understand how dogs can get stolen from houses if they have easy access to the rear or front garden, depending on where they keep their dogs. Also get how people can snatch a dog tied up outside shops etc. I look at that as someone not locking their house or car and keys are on offer. Harsh I know, but reality.

I don't get how they manage it though in rural areas that easily, as in on a field etc. That I don't get as it can't be easy to get access even with cars as such. I know country roads etc. but still...and how do you not know that they are stolen dogs. Given the article mentioned about unwitting buyers. That would be like someone offering me a luxury car for the price of a Lada.
I know there are groups out there that will ship them off to other countries or even in own country and just don't care.....

Not nice to be in a situation like this though where you literally start to not trust people, which is a shame. Especially if they are dog lovers, but just look a bit 'off'.

I would though hunt them down and make their life a misery...just saying... @Jen 'Man on Fire' is better :sneaky:

One was taken at knife point from a local park here and someone I know had their elderly dog stolen from their house. They broke in there was a lot of blood no dog and he's never been found.

You'd think they were stolen for breeding, fighting, field sports for pikeys etc. ie bad things where the person buying is a low life scum as the person selling. But to steal an elderly dog or cross breed doesn't make sense.

If any scum tried it and I was capable I would kill them - no hesitation. Is that harsh?
