Scott and his bladder

Ok folks I could do with some suggestions, advice, help, anything really.

Scott couldn't hold his bladder again this morning despite me getting up at 4.30am which I've been doing since the middle of May !!!

I'll try and keep this as short as pos. Around about the middle of May just when the warm weather started Scott had two accidents early morning indoors like he suddenly couldn't hold his bladder. If it had been just one would've put it down to too much water the night before but because I've been paranoid about their bladders since all the trouble they had as pups two accidents was too much of a coincidence. I took a sample to the vet on the Sunday morning. Rang at lunch before they shut. Test had been done but no vet available to give me the results so would ring me the next day. Three days later and only because I rang them a vet rang to tell me blood in his urine !!! I wasn't impressed at having to wait to be told something was wrong. The sample was also not concentrated properly which could suggest a problem with his kidney function. I took him the next day so they could look at him in the back of my car, no touching by a vet allowed if you remember and they gave him two weeks of antibiotics because no way they could take bloods. I'd also taken a sample from Scout and was told a week later !!! His test was similar but only trace of blood !!! So both dogs with potential kidney failure. Urine test after anti biotics showed no difference in Scott so wanted to take bloods, urine, ultra sound, X-ray. By then I'd got Hillary a vet I've known a long time in the case she looked after my old lab for years. I took Scott to be knocked out which she did outside so he could go u dear in the car. It went much better than I expected. I'd not been hone an hour and she rang to say he was ready. Ultra sound and xray clear, urine test fine this time, had to wait 2 days for bloods and urine culture. When I went to pick him up I had to go and get him out of the cage. Even under the influence my dog wasn't letting a nurse near. That's my boy.? bloods and urine came back fine no kidney problems, no bladder infection, prostate fine. Her answer to my question why is he still doing a massive wee when we first go out anytime of day was it might be because he's drinking more because it's warm!!! I'd said that four weeks before. She did say he might have diabetes insipidus which means they can't regulate water and feel thirsty so drink a lot consequently wee a lot. Very difficult to test Scott for it because they keep them in all day taking urine at different times to see if the kidneys are concentrating. It won't kill him though I just have to watch for dehydration. Anyway back to thus morning. We've had no accidents since before the antibiotics so of course no I'm worrying incase he gas another infection. Once I'd started thinking logically again I ordered some dip sticks off Amazon so future accidents I can test then take a sample to the vet. Also it occurrd to me after last nights walk he had a very big drink, unlikely he got rid of it all when we went out at bedtime so possibility that's why desperate this morning.

Sorry to waffle and not sure how much sense I've made but 4.30am starts are starting to take their toll. Thought I'd post this though as if anyone else has a dog diagnosed with dilute urine it doesn't necessarily mean kidney failure and also if anyone had any ideas on how to get his bladder back under control. I'm hoping when the weather breaks, which it will eventually, we might get back to normal.

PS. When I took Scott for this tests I took another sample from Scout which was normal so no tests needed for him.:)

I don't have any advice but want to offer empathy. You must be so sleep deprived on top of the huge worry. I hope everything works out ok with Scott and Scout's health

You must be pretty exhausted, you poor thing! I hope you don’t find a third incident... Drinking more due to heat could do it. When Obi is on steroids he drinks more and we get the odd accident. So, in my experience if something makes them drink more they’re not necessarily capable of adjusting quickly to the effects. Not necessarily anything to do with the bladder or even due to a problem.

Still, I’m sure you’ll continue to monitor both consumption and output. Hope things normalise soon.

Sorry you are having these issues Jen you must be knackered. I suppose all you can do is be as vigilant as you always are and if in doubt take him back to the vet. You know your dogs best. Give them a hug from us xx

One of our fosters Blake had very dilute urine, this did eventually sort itself out. We had him on 3/4 small meals a day (he was very underweight) and make sure he had a lot of moisture with his food.

Thank you all very much for your support it really helps. I've missed this.. I must apologise for all the typos I'm surprised you understood half of it. 4.30 start is my very convenient excuse.;)

I'm currently waiting for Hillary (vet) to ring me about Scout's tooth so I will mention Scott's accident. I'm guessing she will say something similar to you Rachael (@Oberon ) Thinking logically about it it makes sense. Unfortunately their bladders going dodgy again is one of my nightmares come true because of all the problems last time. I've been paranoid about it for the last seven years.:cautious: @Beanwood it's good to know Blakes waterworks sorted themselves out, thanks Kate. Fingers crossed Scott's do too.

Oh Jen so sorry to hear of the on going problems. You must exhausted with the 4:30 starts. I don't have any experience of the urinary problems (fingers and eve.rything crossed) but @Beanwood 's post triggered some thoughts. Could you introduce more wet meat instead of kibble so that the boys have less reliance on drinking water to stay hydrated. Just thinking back to my conversation with the vet when my late beloved cat Oscar was having urinary problems The advice (apart from medication) was to increase wet meat input and reduce dry food. Worth a try perhaps.....

@MaccieD Anything is worth a try Rosemary thank you. I think I'll have to soak their kibble though. I guess that will have the same effect. If we have wet food in their bowls very often all hell breaks loose. Scout becomes a very good ventriloquist growling while his face is buried in his bowl it's quite impressive really. :)

I like Rosemary's suggestion, more wet food (or soaked kibble) so they don't have to drink so much... Worth a try anyway.

What a worry these dogs are!

Oops! Definitely soak the kibble then as we don't want to risk any food guarding issues xx

My vet has just rung. Scout's tooth has had a reprieve. As the abscess has improved so much she's giving him 10 more days of antibiotics. She really doesn't want to pull the tooth if she can avoid it because and I quote "It's a good, strong tooth and will be a bugger to get out". I mentioned Scott's wee incident. As I thought she pretty much said what Rachael (@Oberon ) said. It's hot so he's drinking more and also we've got the ash and dust blowing over from winter hill. Not exactly sure why that should affect them. (Winter hill set on fire Thursday night. Some of you may have seen it on the news. We are about half an hour away. There is another hill inbetween so we can't see it but there is permanently what looks like a bank of brownie cloud in that direction, everywhere looks a bit smokey and there is a constant smell of distant bonfires. ) Think I will be going to bed with my fingers crossed tonight.;) Off to pick up Scout's antibiotics now and then I'll get soaking kibble.

Good news regarding Scouts tooth Jen. As for the sleep deprivation and worrying over Scott’s urine output and accidents, you must be shattered. Hopefully soaking the kibble will help with keeping him hydrated and lessen the need for him to drink large amounts of water. Fingers crossed for a restful night for you tonight. X

Pleased to report no accidents this morning.(y) This is the bit where you all shake your heads in disbelief. :sneaky: It's dawned on me that a large drink will take time to filter through the system. It doesn't just go in at one end and flow through to the other and then be got rid of on a trip outside which I think is what I've sort of been working on. Therefore I'm guessing a very big drink an hour or so before bed is likely to fill up the bladder overnight despite a quick walk before bed. My OCD about their bladders is the only excuse for my stupidity.:giggle:
