Shadow's reactivity log

I might come join you! 😁
Being somewhere where there are loads of dogs and loads of space is really good for Shadow, and he is so much more relaxed with other dogs when we’re walking in the UK because those are the kinds of places we go.
Harlyn Bay beach is amazing when the tide is out even a little way because it’s huge.
Actually it's thanks to you and Squidge that I'm going - or rather WHERE I'm going. I'm renting from the family who has the agency and houses in St Merryn's holiday park that you recommended. :D

My go to with dogs on a lead, rather than put Stanley on his lead is put him in a sit/stay and do a “watch me”.

I find if I just pop him on his lead and carry on walking past he will still want to interact and show interest in the other dog whereas he knows if he’s a good boy he’s going to get so many bisky bones for sitting nice and watching mummy.
I always put the lead on as 99% of the time I'm actually in an on-lead area (stupid councils and their stupid rules). I either get Ella to sit or just keep walking, depending on how she's acting, how much space there is, how the other dog/owner is acting etc.

I often have the pram with me too so I always recall Nathan (much harder to train than Ella's recall) and will walk so that Ella is on the far side from the other dog. It does help to have the pram in these situations and it means that the dogs can't stare at each other because the pram is in the way.

A friend of mine sent me a message the other day to ask if she could join us on one of our snowshoe walks with the Labradogs. She has a five-month Australian Shepherd called Rocky. Shadow met him briefly and accidentally a couple of weeks ago and just did the stiff sniff thing before I called him away, but they've not met other than that. I said that they would have to meet in a controlled manner before I agreed for them to join us.
This morning, we met up at the start of a walk just down the valley. I had Shadow on a long line and Rocky was on lead, and they walked with us following along at a good distance. Shadow was a bit concerned when they first turned up, but once we started moving, he was more interested in sniffing all the smells than in the dog in front. Once it opened up into a bit of a snow field, I popped the muzzle on Shadow and my friend let Rocky off the lead - I then asked her to walk away so we weren't standing there staring at the dogs. Rocky looked at us, but then trotted off after her, good as gold. He came over a couple of times and I let Shadow have the full extent of the line so I was as far back as possible, and they both had a good sniff, then separated. I called Shadow to me, cued him to "get up" (standing up on me) and told him he was such a good boy - this is one of his favourite things and makes him light up.
After that, we mooched along for a while, and they came together a few more times. At first, Shadow looked quite uncomfortable, so I asked my friend to call the puppy, but he eventually settled down, and I was happy to let him off the line. He behaved perfectly; Rocky was trying to get him to play, chased him a lot and barked in his face a fair bit, but Shadow just ignored him, other than a couple of very appropriate warning growls which Rocky heeded.
By the end of an hour's walk, I was happy to remove the muzzle and let Shadow dig for cones in the snow.

He was a total superstar, I'm SO proud of him!

Oh, as an aside, I gave him a half dose of Gabapentin about an hour before we went out. I have no idea if it helped, but it certainly didn't hinder, so I'll do the same before we go out with the girls and Rocky on Sunday. I'll keep him muzzled at first again, but I am pretty sure it will be fine. My friend was like "There's nothing wrong with him! What are you worried about?"

This is so good to hear, you must be so pleased. Distance is always your friend at the beginning of these situations. It's lovely that you were able to let them be together after a while, that is a real breakthrough. Well done Shadow you are definitely a superstar. All your hard work is paying off Fiona and it bodes well for the future.

Oh, and something else that happened; we had a few cross-country skiers go past us. I put Shadow on lead the first few times, and it took me a while to realise this was completely unnecessary. He used to run and bark at skiers, so I had to get him on lead, but today I noticed he was only vaguely interested in them, so when the next couple went past, I just called him to heel and we passed without any issue whatsoever. He really has come a long way, even if he's not perfect.

Do you think it's because there's only one dog to contend with?
No, Shadow is quite capable of being a dick when it's only him and one other dog :D

That said, he is generally worse when Willow is there; Shadow doesn't quite resource guard her, but if a dog is bothering her, he gets upset by it. So, other than I needed to have all my concentration on him, it is a step up to have Willow there (he doesn't care about Squidge or Ginny) so we had to meet up one on one first.

Shadow looks fantastic and relaxed with the puppy.
He wasn't this relaxed initially, I didn't get it on video, sadly, and it was probably the most interesting part. His body language said he was uncomfortable with the puppy trying to get him to play, but he didn't react even though he would have done previously. I had done quite a bit of relaxation work with him before they arrived, so maybe that had something to do with it. Or the drugs :cwl:
But just having my friend call Rocky away and then giving Shadow a big fuss, having him standing up against me, really made him feel better about it, and he very quickly started to take the puppy in his stride; maybe after two or three minutes, no longer.
