Side effects of Drontal?

Yes, I've heard some dogs don't do well on it. I do wish there was a "one tablet fits all" for what we need.

Here is a little chart I put together some time ago which shows what some common products protect against. Risk for these factors varies between locations, so you have to know what is a risk where you are. I didn't include Bravecto/Nexgard because I already knew they didn't do what I was looking for in the drugs.

Ours are on Milbemax, monthly and Nexgard, Monthly. No side effects - it’s expensive ‘tho.

Pepper’s on Millbemax and Bravecto as recommended by our local vet. Not had any manic reactions to either. His manic moments just happen at any time!

He dislikes both tablets so we have to cut them up and hide them in sausage covered in squeezy cheese or peanut butter to get them inside him!

Can I ask why you are using Bravecto in the winter?? Surely there is no risk of fleas or ticks at this time of year. I would use it as little as possible, if I were you.

I use Drontal for Hattie & Charlie without any side affects at all. They have always had it, Hattie is 11 years and Charlie is 8 years xx

I use Virbac Vitaminthe paste. No side effects. However I have to go to the UK soon, and he has to have the official recognized stuff. Injection....and then I am a bad Mama as I do not know!!

Read up about it, particularly the possible side effects, before just using it as a precaution. Most dogs seem to be fine with Bravecto or Nexgard etc, but some can suffer very nasty reactions - including mine. I’m not being at all critical of you, I know you’re doing your very best by your pup, but it’s just as well to be aware of both sides of the argument for and against.

It might be worth discussing the risk factor in your area as well. It does vary from place to place apparently.

I agree with @Jelinga , why use these things if not really necessary?

Agree. We haven’t used flea/tick pesticides in 2.5 years and our boy has no fleas. But we do wash bedding and vacuum frequently. Fleas mostly live in the surrounding environment, not on the dog.

All Guide Dogs and pups have Milbemax and Nexgard all year round. They wouldn’t give them unnecessarily or if they were at risk.

They used to give Drontal but as soon as side effects started being reported they moved to Milbemax.

I do the same with Tatze. We have some very mild winters. Having suffered fleas and ticks with my Cavaliers I wouldn’t risk it again. It took us months to get rid of those darned fleas.

That’s the thing: know your risk factors. I don’t use Advantix or Advocate from late summer until spring because there is no risk of ticks, fleas, or sand flies, but in spring and early summer, they get everything thrown at them. I worm all year round because the girls enjoy eating frozen wild boar poo in the winters

I would rather not give Maisy anything like this but the vet says we are in a high risk area of the worms, lung, heart etc.
Also, she does not have fleas but other dogs and cats do and she mixes with a lot of other dogs. It only takes one little bugger to hitch a ride and I have a house, office building and car infested.

Can quite understand if you are in a high risk area of heart and lung worms. My dog mixes with many other dogs, never known a flea to hitch a ride!

Catching up late but you can add Carbon to the list of weirdo side effects from Drontal...in his case volcanic vomiting a couple hours after being dosed. He did fine with the second dose as I took more precautions - namely no car rides within 12 plus hours of dosing - but I'll go back to Milbemax when he needs worming again. Brogan was on monthly Milbemax for pretty much his whole life with no issue.

I'm pretty much with @Jelinga on not bothering with flea stuff, depending on your geography. In California, my dogs just seemed not to pick up fleas - could have been the brewer's yeast and apple cider vinegar in their food, but who knows. Once I hit Spain, though, all the anti-Leish stuff I had to use was also anti-flea - and same for the anti-tick stuff I had to use in Germany. So no fleas either way.

That’s the reason for vacuuming—to vacuum up the eggs and dispose of the vacuum cleaner contents immediately before the fleas hatch! We use a bagless vacuum cleaner, but for those with bags I’ve read recommended that you put pesticide in the bag in case the fleas hatch. Although I’d only recommend that if there’s a flea problem; otherwise, there’s no point in using pesticides unnecessarily for obvious reasons.

Homer has soft poops after Dontral, but the worst is that he hates them and finds every way of spitting out the disguised offending tablet. He takes all other tablets really easily but getting Dontal down him is tricky.
