Sky is unwell

Thank you for all your kind posts. By the time we went to bed, I felt reasonably happy to leave Sky with her usual sleeping arrangements. She seems her usual self this morning - no more sickness and she was as excited as always when her breakfast was being prepared. What happened yesterday was scary and weird. I have seen her eat grass before but this was frenetic and the grunting noises alarming. Also the head nodding was alarming but probably scares me more than it bothers her - wish I knew. She hasn’t had her early morning poo yet but in all other respects seems her usual self.

I am sorry you are having a few issues with Casper @kateincornwall. Our oldies certainly bring worries.

I’m glad Sky is feeling better today. Harley has been quite poorly recently and she munched grass lik ethere was no tomorrow for several days (she did go to the vet). Hope it was a one off and that Sky is ok x

Good news that Sky seems better today @Atemas - hopefully just a blip and she won’t feel like that again. Huge sympathy for you, it’s horrible when they’re so clearly not right xx

Sorry you had a scare and that Sky was distressed. I'm glad to hear she's feeling better this morning - a huge relief to you to see her excited for breakfast, I'm sure. Poor thing, she is still a Labrador, so missing a meal ....

If it makes you feel any better, I know a friend's dog who does that frantic grass-pulling thing sometimes to make himself vomit. It looks a world apart from normal grass eating, and is rather dramatic. He's a normal healthy dog otherwise.

That’s interesting to hear about another dog doing it @snowbunny. Yes certainly dramatic and went on for ages
Snowie used to eat our lemongrass plant that grows just outside our bedroom door to the balcony. He’d munch dramatically, then vomit, then have a seizure. We think he felt nauseous with the feeling of the seizure coming on. Since not having had a seizure in two years, he’s stopped the dramatic eating. He now eats it from time to time, not as dramatic, usually when he’s just woken up and waiting for breakfast. My guess is his intestinal juices are firing up and it makes him feel slightly nauseous—that early morning hunger puke feeling. I’m only surmising based on human experiences and people being able to verbalize. Unfortunately he can’t tell us!

Apparently dogs also eat grass a lot if they have worms or just want to get their bowels moving. And of course to help vomit up something.

My lot all eat grass in the spring; I think they just like the sweetness of the new shoots. I know when I first saw them doing it, I thought it had to be something "medical", but after seeing the pattern over the years, I'm sure it's just because it tastes good - and they're Labradors, right? :D

I hope Sky is ok now.
Maisy eats grass all the time but not in that frantic way you described. If she's with some friends and one of them starts, they will all copy and form a line of grass munchers, like sheep.

Thank you for your comments about Sky. She is back to her usual self thank goodness. Don’t know what Monday was all about. Her chances of eating something that disagrees with her are vastly reduced these days as she walks so little and always on lead now except in the garden and the dogs are only out there when I am with them.

Both dogs eat grass usually plucking at juicy blades but this was something else entirely - it was manic tearing the top off the grass - not nice to observe and definitely done to make herself sick. The head nodding was also upsetting. I look at her and wonder what’s going on with her. These past few days she has stayed very close to me.
