Very interesting thread, thank you for all your replies, fascinating!

So far we have a weight range between 22kg - 40kg - plus all the variables in-between, exercises levels, neuter, age and health status. If you include wee Otter, she weighs in at 16kg.

This lad if you lightly run your hand down his back, hips and side you can clearly feel all his bones. I really don't like being able to feel a dogs backbone.

I have to admit, I have never seen such an active lab as this one! He is amazing to watch, like a gazelle, he is able to leap enormous heights. He gave a whippet a run for his money yesterday! He is great fun, and lovely to have around. On an emotional level, we see a slightly different picture, when he switches "on" it takes him a age to relax. Lead walking is uncomfortable, he would happily choke himself, his pulling is terrible poor lad! He is a very happy boy though, even taking into account his addictive personalty! The relaxation protocol, and cold turkey on balls will certainly help.

I have switched his food to a denser kibble, high in fat, and three small meals a day. :)

Holly is on about 200g of kibble a day, supplemented with fruit and veg treats during the day which she loves! Have you ever seen a whole carrot go down in three bites? This has kept her weight around 27-28 kg for the last few years.

Homer gets 450g kibble, plus the corners of my toast and a few treats. He's 32kg. when he stretches out you can see his ribs and he's got strong thigh/hip and front shoulder muscles. he used to have loads of energy and run almost non stop of his walks but in the last year he's slowed down a lot. I'm keeping an eye on whether his food will need to be reduced little by little as he gets older and he's not as active as he was.
