It was a half day shoot yesterday and not requiring much walking so I took the SBD as a treat - she still sits on the doormat when I get everything ready and wants to come even though I know she's really not fit enough anymore. She has arthritis in her elbows and a touch of sciatica in her lower spine. She was so pleased to come and perked up just like a young dog again. She already knows most of the other dogs and there was quite a bit of meet and greet in the yard before we set off. I was quite touched as well when quite a few of the beaters made a great fuss of her and I think were really pleased to see my old dog again.

I took care to make sure she didn't jump off the trailer, and the walking for each drive was easy. She even picked up one of my birds for me. She also found her way through some stock fence after another but as it was up in the branches of a tree all she could do was mark it. Between drives more than one beater was photographing her on their phones while she was lying down! I actually found, and still find it, very moving that folks like my dog so much. By lunchtime (it was the end of season shoot lunch - hence the half day) she was clearly quite tired and sore. I popped her home a tired but obviously contented dog.

Oh dear! This morning she's been in real trouble. Really doesn't want to walk. A little scream when she did a wee. Poor lamb and I now feel such a heel having taken her when it's now oh so clear she can't do it. Honestly it makes me weep! The little buggers get so deep inside you it really hurts when they show their age and are in trouble. Anyway it's now pretty simple - she can't do anything physical at all anymore. Short slow walks and lots of looking out of the window and sleeping between.

She's had all her meds this morning but I'll give her an extra shot of Metacam this evening and pretty much complete rest for the next couple of days. She's currently snoring behind the sofa by the way.

Poor lamb , I know what you mean though David , as Sam was always eager even when he was in the later stages of his cancer . Its s fine balancing act , letting them enjoy themselves or causing more pain . Rest for your dear girl now , what a shame when the spirit is so willing x

You took her, you both loved it, I am sure she will be OK in a day or two. :inlove::hug:Don't feel bad, although it's the hardest thing to see our dogs uncomfortable. Pretty sure if you asked the SBD would she like a couple of gentle drives, but will be a bit sore after well we can guess what she would say!:tail::tail::smiledog:

Oh David I feel such sadness in your post but please you have given Lady a wonderful life doing what you trained her to do, she loved it but now it's time to put her paws up and take it easy just like all our dogs will eventually have to do. It's difficult for you too as you are giving up something you enjoy so much. Enjoy a different kind of life with Lady which is just as special. xxx

Oh, I totally understand that scream and never wanting to let her get sore again. I stopped taking Snowie to the beach for this reason. He’d overdo it and then cry out in pain later that night just trying to lie down. I asked the dog physio whether he could ever go back to the beach, and she said yes, just that you need to manage it. So, he gets a short leash walk, then 2-5 minutes on the beach (oh, the joy in his face as he runs into the sea!), and then back on the leash for a firm-surface controlled walk. It seems to be working fine. So, perhaps that is what you could do with Lady? Take her for the meet and greet, keep her mostly in the car, just one short retrieve, and at least she can have the enjoyment of the outing? I really feel for you. xxx

Thank you all so much for your nice remarks and support. She's no better this morning and actually I'm pretty sure it's not her elbows but something in her lower back. She's in real trouble with it and I've got an urgent appointment at the vet at 09:45 this morning. I tend to focus on her elbows with the know problem and chronic pain but when she yelps she's not limping. Couldn't even get her to wee or poo this morning. Will report back.

Vet thinks it's most likely just an acute sciatica attack. She really didn't like it at all when he flexed her rear right leg back. She's never bitten anyone but I'm sure I heard her teeth click on fresh air when she lunged back at the vet ( he's very quick though!). He's put on a hefty dose of tramadol for 7 days and minimal exercise regime. Go back if she's no better. Also he says we can up the gabapentin dose if necessary and put her on longer term tramadol.

I always weigh Lady when we go to the vet (once a month at the moment). She weighed in at 29.4kg. We had a bit of time to kill so I took her out onto the exercise grass to see if I could get her to pooh and wee as she hadn't been at all this morning. Success in that area so I weighed her again and she was just 29.1kg. So the wee and pooh weighed 0.3kg - just in case you are interested you know!
