Oh poor boy.
I'm hoping the vet finds something to help. Even a biologic treatment or steroid sparing disease modifying drug?
Do they even know the cause?

Having experienced discoid lupus with Lilly, its know how hard it can sometimes be to get skin diagnoses as biopsies are often unhelpful and its down to the knowledge/experience of your vet.

Sending you hugs and Snowie all the Lambies. It’s so hard to see him be tormented by the itching, but having him with so much bounce - and always that happy tail ❤ - tells another story. He just seems to always have all the faith in you that you’re helping him, he’s really remarkable.

I hope the vet has some tricks up their sleeve so that you can celebrate his 14th birthday without worry. 🙏

Unfortunately we don’t know the cause. I’ll ask our vet tomorrow if there is any way to find out. Although I’d have thought he would’ve tested if he thought it was viable. He searched him for lumps before, could be mast cell cancer (I think that’s the cancer?) that can cause itchiness.

What do you mean by biologic treatment or steroid sparing disease modifying drug? He was on Cytopoint, but it stopped being effective.

I think cytopoint, apoquel and atopica(?) Are the main steroid sparing drugs, sorry I hadn't recalled Snowie had been on it.
The point is that you can reduce or stop the high doses of steroids that you might need to use to control the itching.
I hope your vet has some new ideas.
Sorry.....

I'm so sorry your dear Snowie is going through this. I hope your vet can offer some help. Have you tried Malaseb baths? (They helped a dog with severe skin problems that my parents owned many years ago.) xx

Just catching up - I’m sorry Snowie is so itchie and very much hope the vet can find the right solution to alleviate the itchiness. Sending masses of :thelambiesarecoming: and .

Thank you. Yes, we are doing Malaseb baths every 5-7 days. Been doing this for about 2 years now. Although today our vet said do it every 2 days while his skin is so bad.

Our vet said he prefers the Malaseb bath as the first treatment, before anything else. His own Golden has a hotspot under his ear flap. He himself is bathing that spot every day. It’s been a week and he’s now seeing an improvement. But he said his dog doesn’t have a general skin disease, like Snowie. So that bath is all he needs. Snowie needs in addition to the bath prednisone and antibiotics.

We’re back from the vet. Snowie was on Apoquel (1 1/2 years) and then Cytopoint (1 year). Both stopped working and he actually got worse hotspots and had a worse skin condition than before he started them. I’ve read anecdotally similar responses, so I do wonder if we should ever have tried them at all.

Our vet put him back on an antibiotic because he is clearly fighting an infection. And upped the dose of prednisone in the short term. 4 tabs 2x a day for 3 days. Then 4 tabs 1x a day for 5 days. Then 2 tabs 1x a day for 5 days. Then back to see him to reassess. Also to bath with Malaseb every 2 days.

I asked if there’s a test to work out the cause. His response: I can waste your money trying. He suspects it’s an allergic response. He said if it were a mast cell tumour, the itchy skin and flare up he’s seeing now—which he said is sudden—wouldn’t be caused by a mast cell tumour. He said all his patients are extremely itchy at the moment made worse by the heat (it’s much hotter this year in Nov/Dec than previous years). He said even if we found out what Snowie is allergic to, would we be able to avoid it? He said it’s most likely airborne allergens.

Am I thankful that he doesn’t want to waste our money? Am I annoyed that he doesn’t want to try to investigate further? Really, I just don’t know. He said his son comes out in welts when drinking alcohol. They spent 1000s trying to find the allergen. Came back as beesting. He said the allergy tests are not helpful enough.

I asked if pts (I can’t even write out the words) is something he’d consider for an itchy dog. He said euthanasia must be considered if the dog is uncomfortable. But he said Snowie is still bright and comes in wagging his tail and barks for treats. So he deserves further treatment to see if we can help him. He said we should see how he responds to this treatment over the next two weeks.

It’s very depressing and upsetting. Of course we know that our dogs will die at some point. But I just can’t bear the thought of ending Snowie’s life when he’s so capable and cheerful in all other ways. And of course my judgement is affected by exhaustion because I am up with him at least twice in the night every night.

Strange that many of the vet's patients are very itchy at the moment, so maybe it is something in the environment. As long as Snowie seems to be bright and happy try not to think too far into the future, enjoy him now. Like you, I used to weep at 'when is it going to happen' but do try to enjoy the moment. Sending all love to you and metaphorically holding your hand x

Oh I’m so sorry that Snowie is very itchy right now  But hopefully that is a little reassuring, that he’s not the only one appearing worse right now. Just have to get through this extra hot weather and with the help of the meds hopefully your sweet boy will have some relief very soon 💙 :thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming:
