Snowie

I’m sorry your friend’s words were so upsetting - I’d be in pieces too if someone said that to me. But you handled it perfectly and from your last post it sounds like you’ve got your spirits back. Snowie is clearly still a happy dog living his best life even if with age that looks different than his life when younger. As others have said better, he’s your boy and you’ll know when the wind changes. You’re prepared, have a plan, and with all that personality that he has, I suspect it will be Snowie will give you the gift of telling you quite clearly when he’s ready for things to change. He’s got more ice cream to eat and people to charm yet! 🥰

We were at the vet today cos Snowie stepped on something going down into a stream 3 weeks ago. Initially we thought it was just a bad scratch that was infected, but the hole in his paw pad wasn’t healing and the pad was very swollen (back paw).

The vet (a lovely locum; our vet is away) first flushed the hole with local anaesthetic to numb it before injecting local anaesthetic (he said an injection is painful without the initial numbing) and then flushed the hole out and dug around with tweezers. Two little splinters came out. Hopefully they are the only culprits. He said he didn’t want to cut if not necessary. Inserted antibiotic gel into the wound and said to clean locally with Biotane and apply Bactroban and come back in two days if no obvious improvement. Snowie also got prednisone for 3 days.

I was glad that he didn’t sedate Snowie. He said he wanted to try to avoid sedation. He was happy for me to be with Snowie the entire time. Two lovely assistants held him steady on the table, and he even wagged his tail. He was really so easy.

When I mentioned that my friend had suggested pts, he looked surprised and said he’s absolutely nowhere near that stage. Look, Snowie is always animated and happy at the vet. Other times he can be slow and tired. I guess my friend just remembers his slow and tired side.

Whilst of course I'm not pleased that Snowie has a sore paw, I am glad that you had the opportunity for that conversation with the vet, which echoes your feelings on the matter and also what everyone here has been saying. There's life in the old dog yet, as the saying goes!

Thank you! Yes, he totally put my mind at rest. And the prednisone has taken years off Snowie. He’s way too energetic now!! 😁 Up early sliding around the bed, tail thumping, eager for breakfast. Up in an instant for anything. Transformed. Pity it can’t be used long term. We are back at our vet on Friday for the monthly Cytopoint injection, so will ask about long term meds.

His paw is healing really well.

I met up with my friend (a week later) for another walk. Ice creams again, cos I’m sure I read in this thread that Snowie should get more! 😛 We didn’t bring up The Subject again. For me, it feels odd and uncomfortable defending a personal choice about whether my dog should live or not, so I didn’t even want to talk about it. Which is also unusual for me, because usually I’m totally open to discussing anything. No subjects are taboo. But right now I’m feeling rather sensitive.

And now for the ice-cream!
