Snowie’s paws are too sore for walking

Snowie’s front paws are swollen and painful. He doesn’t want to go out walking much. And he’s now sleeping more—perhaps from boredom. But he is definitely deteriorating and aging rapidly.

It started years ago with a yeast overgrowth and licking, but which we didn’t treat properly (we didn’t understand the issue and our then vet didn’t guide us). Fast forward several years and he licked all the fur out from between the pads and the bare skin is sensitive to sand and grit. And his toes and pads are swollen and the tissue thickened and beyond repair. It took the opthalmologist vet to recognise the issue (yeast overgrowth)—she inspected them carefully while he was under GA (to remove a growth on his eyelid) and she washed them thoroughly. He didn’t like us to touch them otherwise—must’ve been very painful.

Anyway, since then, we’ve shampooed them regularly with antifungal shampoo and put on antiseptic barrier cream, and he wears shoes on walks. But the biggest size available is still too tight, and now that has caused other issues—imagine your baby toe being rubbed by a tight shoe. So, now he slinks away when his shoes come out, but he won’t walk on the pavement “barefoot” and wants to go home. He also slinks away when just socks come out, although we are forcing him to wear them so that he can at least go out once a day, even if only around the block. He has become very unfit.

I wish I could make his paws better. We’ve started Epsom salt soaks again when he has his meals.

Finn has this too. He can't walk on uneven pavement, little stones or in the woods where nuts lies on the ground. His shoes are also too tight and he walks away when I wanted to put them on. We 'walk' him without shoes now, which means he has a sniff and trots around a little spot. He often stands still and won't move, just looks at me as if he is saying that he can't do it anymore. He is very sore and pants a lot....

I am so sorry you have this with Snowy!!

@Anne123 yes, exactly the same as Snowie. Also pants, which either means he’s unfit or in pain.

He gets lots of treats at home, eats what we’re snacking on. So today I made him walk around the kitchen island for every treat. He did this no problem! Wagged his tail. The smooth cool tiles are wonderful underfoot. So I think I’ll do this more often just to keep him moving.

So sorry to hear poor Snowie's having these problems. Well done, though, for finding a way to keep him mobile that he actually enjoys.

He turned 13 in January.

I’ll look on YouTube, thanks for the idea. I’m amazed the sizes don’t accommodate big paws because my vet told me that big dogs are more prone to front paw problems given the weight bearing over the chest area.

That’s so hard on him, and you!! Good on you for thinking outside to box and getting him to walk more where he isn’t so uncomfortable! Maybe some “brain games” to keep him occupied?

Poor boy. Hope the foot baths are helping x
Thank you, I do believe they are helping! He is walking much better, but still runs away when his shoes come out. Even when just socks come out he moves away with speed. But I insist he puts on his socks (towelling baby socks) and I also apply Sudocrem between the pads and toes. Sometimes he goes out, crosses the round to wee and sniff a little grassy mound, and then wants to come home. Other times, like yesterday, he took me for a long walk (2.5km, 1 1/4 hr) albeit slow cos he has to sniff everything.

I’m feeling a bit more hopeful, perhaps the foot baths are the thing he needed.

But without the shoes, we are very limited to where we can walk—pavements and the beach promenade. No mountain paths, which is my preference because then he can walk off lead.
