Sore ear

I clean Snowie’s ears every day. Just a wipe of the outer ear with the towel after drying him off from a swim. There’s usually dirt that comes out. If they’re really dirty, I do a thorough job with damp cotton wool (sometimes with colloidal silver) and a cotton bud to get into all the grooves. I also often use a piece of toilet paper wrapped around my finger to wipe out his ears. Yes, when he accompanies me to the little room! Then I say: Let’s clean ears. He knows what that means. If he doesn’t want them cleaned, he walks away (obviously I can’t follow him!!!). Otherwise, he lets me place his head on my knee and waits patiently while I do a wipe. He gets to sniff the gunk that’s comes out (if there is brown gunk). And wags his tail if I say: Ooh your ears are dirty!!

A dog groomer on a fb page that I’m on said that daily cleaning of ears usually prevents ear problems.

I've always checked Ella's ears (usually every night, when we're cuddling on the couch) but they've never been dirty or smelly before so I've never worried about them. This came up over night and was the first time I've ever seen one red or dirty.

Fingers crossed it's a one off 🤞

Thanks @Candy - that's good to know. Do you put the drops actually into the ear canal, or just wet the cotton balls and swab?
And do you just clean the outer ear, or do you get your finger in and do an excavation of the inner ear :giggl: :hmm: ?

Squirt as far into the ear as possible ( this is vet's advice) massage ear for about a minute per ear to encourage drops to go as far down as possible. Allow and encourage dog to do mahoosive ear flapping ( this helps to move the ear gunk upwards and outwards) wipe aforementioned ear gunk from ear with damp cotton wool ( most satisfactory) Reward dog hugely (chicken, sausage, you know the sort of thing,)and big big fuss and praise. Joy actually seems to like it all now, although it has taken us a while to get there! Good luck with your lovely Pongster!xxx

Rourke is now 8 years old and I have never cleaned his ears, they are lovely, clean pale pink :)
It really does seem to vary from dog to dog. I don’t need to clean my dogs’ ears, either, and think the advice is, if they don’t have any problems, it’s best to leave well alone.
Some dogs do seem to suffer with their ears, though.
As a pup, Squidge’s ears were far less pristine than the others’, but they have become perfect with age, and I thankfully don’t need to touch them.

Ella's ear is looking better already. The redness has reduced significantly and we're only five days into two weeks of drops. Of course the ear is gross and oily from the drops though 🙄

I've also perfected my "ear drop" technique. Ella loves the ear rub part of the treatment so I just start rubbing her ear in a circular motion, then move the motion upwards to expose the inside of her ear. Squirt the syringe in and keep rubbing. She doesn't even flinch 🙂
