Sore Paw?

Snowie looked like he was limping slightly. Not enough to know for sure. He was also licking his paw a lot. Licked it raw in one patch. He eventually let me prise open the pads to inspect inside and I can see a little cut. Must’ve been too sore before cos he’d pull his paw away and start licking, although he let me put my fingers in there and I could feel swelling. And he let me apply antiseptic cream. I desperately hope it’s not a grass seed cos there’s no sign of one. How fast do they travel up? Is there inflammation in the leg associated with it? I think (hope!) it might’ve been a sharp shell or something at the beach. When I first noticed the limp (which is gone now) I was of course worried about a joint. Funny how a paw cut is a relief! Hope Bramble’s limp resolves soon and you get to the bottom of it.

Poor Bramble.

Could there be a thorn or seed wedged between her toes rather than in the pad itself?
That was our first thought...the cover she got stuck in was very brambley. We have checked very thoroughly but you never know...I think we have isolated one area of her paw, so will have another look later.

Last night we spotted a tiny rough area on one of her pads, that possibly could be an entry point. You could only see it with a magnifying glass, and even then we weren't sure. We cobbled together a raw honey poultice, covered with a wet dressing to keep the area moist then vet wrapped her paw. Wrapping downwards not upwards as you would normally do. Checked she was comfortable then left it on all night.

This morning, took the dressing down, soaked her paw gently with a warm cloth, before examining the area where we thought we spotted an entry point. This area looked a bit more likely after the poultice. I carefully exerted gentle pressure on either side of her pad.

And hey presto! This horrid thorn shot out and landed on my sweatshirt. Can't tell you how relieved we are! That must have been so sore the poor girl.
