Sore Paw?

Kate, this sounds so clever - I’d love to learn this sort of home remedy. How do you make a raw honey poultice? Is it ‘simply’ a pad of cotton with a dollop of raw (not blended and treated) honey on it?
Yes. We don't blend or treat our honey so classed as raw. Raw honey contains lots of nutrients, and importantly enzymes that work together when in contact with body fluids. By keeping her paw moist and soft the thorn was able to be drawn upwards. I applied a natural paw balm first to soften her pad, then a hot damp towel before applying the honey dressing. (on adhesive dressing gauze from a first aid pack ) Then a layer of wet warm gauze and vet wrap on top of the gauze wrapped downwards not upwards. I must admit, rather surprised how effective this was! That thorn really shot out!

I'm so glad you found the thorn as if it had been left it can cause problems.
I didn't know about the raw honey, learn something new every day.
My go to is an epson salt poultice.

a natural paw balm
These are my last 2 supplementary questions ;):
1. what's your natural paw balm of choice? (It looks like there are a lot on the market, and a few DIY recipes)
2. do you use this regularly, or over winter on 'dry, cracked pads' as a number of adverts seem to recommend?
I've been slowly putting together a proper care kit, and this sounds handy... [also @snowbunny I haven't forgotten I'm going to write up my First Aid for Dogs training gen - work in progress!]

Poor Bramble but well done Beanwoods that is just great and far better for her. Hattie had that awful abscess a month ago due to a grass seed or a thorne that I couldn't see for the life of me. Over £100 vet bill, a week of no walks/PAT work and a bucket load of AB's also the possibility of surgery. Not good. So glad Bramble is OK. xx

Well, I think we spoke too soon. Such a miserable girlie this morning, didn't want to even get out of bed. Sore paw is back, and because we thought there may be an infection brewing it was straight to the vet. After a very thorough check the vet concluded a cellulitis around the entry point of the thorn, this also fits the timescale. So, treating medically with antibiotics, pain relief and rest. Poor Bramble...
