Sore tummy

Vets have just called. Harley has pancreatitis. They have said she needs to be on a low fat diet and suggested Royal Canin Gastro intestinal low fat. I've used Royal Canin before and she really didn't like it. Food is such a minefield. At present Harley is on Nutriment Raw Nutriment Adult | Nutritional Rating 97%

I thought it was quiet a good food, but vets aren't so keen on it??. I'm really bad at understanding food labels. Can anyone help or suggest a low fat food and low fat treats? I prefer to stay as natural as possible - I would rather not use kibble unless we really have to.
I am sorry Harley has pancreatitis, my first thought was it might be pancreatitis but she didn't exhibit the classical sign. My daughter has a dog who has intermittent pancreatitis and I think feeds her on a low fat tinned food and no dog biscuits. It is important that you feed her on a low fat diet.

Poor Harley, but at least now you have a diagnosis you can start to help her.
I don't have experience of pancreatitis in dogs but I am feeding Molly a low-fat home-cooked diet and finding it easy to do (though a bit pricey). I buy frozen white fish (pollock) and feed with mostly low-glycemic vegetables (broccoli, spinach, green beans). I also feed chicken with the skin removed. Molly has an egg twice a week and minced beef (5% fat but with all the fat drained off). She also has a small amount of tinned sardine a day but I imagine that might be too high in fat for Harley.
I'm not feeding any grains, apart from the flour in the liver cake I make (45g per day of which 15g is flour).
Apparently it's important to add calcium so I grind eggshells and add a teaspoon of that a day.
I'm feeding 2% in weight of food of the weight I would like Molly to be.

While you look around at commercial foods or research home-made, I don't see why you can't feed Harley white fish or chicken with the skin removed plus veg, as it won't matter if it's not a completely balanced diet for a few weeks.

I hope you can get her more comfortable soon.

I guess you can now research and plan , poor Harley , some great suggestions here . Sam had a bout of this when he was quite young , I used to add low fat cottage cheese or low fat yoghurt to his food . I used sweet potato quite a lot as a carb , and white fish or plain boiled chicken as the protein , good luck Naya , I hope she feels better soon xx

I believe Lily’s kitchen is quite good - we have the recovery recipe tin that we use if either of the girls have upset tummies.
There are a lot of different flavours etc. and I’m unsure about fat content but maybe worth a look?

Sending hugs to you and Harley:hug:

Poor Harley. Royal Canin has a vet low fat wet food that Quinn loves, maybe you could use that instead of the dry while you get her settled?

Sorry to hear. At least it’s acute. Hopefully she will recover quickly and you won’t have to worry all the time about fat content.

Could you ask your current raw food supplier if they do a low-fat version?

The woman who runs a local raw food Facebook page I belong to put her labs on a diet. The vet said they must lose 8kg each. She formulated a balanced diet that still fed the same amount of food in grams but with much less fat. Dogs lost the weight. So, if you don’t mind DIY, you could then have complete control over her diet. (Which reminds me: tomorrow is the day I must prep Snowie’s monthly batch. Worst day of the month!!)

Thanks all. I am on a group called Frank & Jelly’s who have a nutritionist who supports raw and home cooked food and offers 1-2-1 consultations. I’ve read up about her and she seems to be credible and does a lot of free talks online about canine nutrition and managing conditions such as pancreatitis. I’ve just booked a 1-2-1 consult (£65 which I thought very reasonable). I’ve been doing so much reading today and am happier around knowledge of the condition, but want to get it right so need some support to do this.

It sounds like you have a plan @Naya.
I don't know if this helps but if you want to go the RAW/BARF route there is a company called Cotswald RAW
https://www.cotswoldraw.com/senior-range/Beef-Mince-enhanced. There are several stockists in Bristol.
We used it when we visited the UK the first time with 13 week puppy Hunter and we were VERY RAW conscious new doting puppy parents feeding RAW as insisted by the breeder:$ .
It was really very good quality and the 70/30 range for older dogs is 7 or 8% fat. Stay off the lamb as higher fat. Just an idea if you don't want to DIY the RAW yourself. Good luck with your research and big kisses and gentle cuddles for Harley . X
