Surprising high value treat!

The dogs had been playing in the garden with my son yesterday when I got home and Tuppence was still holding her favourite ball. She had refused to drop it in exchange for a treat when she came indoors and was trotting around with her gleeful I’m not giving this up for anyone or anything expression.

After a while I started preparing supper and was cutting up carrots when I felt a heavy ball being dropped on my foot... carrot ends and peelings are higher value than I thought!

Oh yes, Cassie would do that, she really adores carrot. It stems I believe from being given frozen carrots to help her gums when teething as a puppy.
I've never used them as rewards when training though, maybe I should try them!

LOL, it always makes me laugh when people talk about using veggies as training treats. That would not cut it for Shadow, not one bit. All the pups had frozen carrots when they were teething, but Shadow is not interested now. At best, if I offer him the end of a carrot, he'll give it a thoughtful chew then spit it out.

Cooked veggies in his meals are another matter, though. He's more than happy to scoff them up :)

Gosh I don't think I've known a dog eat cucumber @Loraseal , I'll have to see if Cassie likes it!

Yes I suppose they don't necessarily get a taste for what they eat in puppyhood. Cassie ate fag ends :puke:, horse poo and apples as a puppy. Of these only apples have persisted, perhaps it's the sugar content.

His dog walker says its his after dinner cigar!
LOL

Snowie used to get an “after dinner breath carrot”. Like an after dinner breath mint. Especially good after a meal of green dirty tripe.

But he’s now gone off his after dinner raw carrot. Leaves it on his bed. Eats other raw veg, and small bits of raw carrot if he's begging while I eat a salad (he’ll even eat lettuce if it comes from my plate). But no cigar anymore!

Harley loves carrots too.......she always hangs around when I’m cooking to see what she can have!
Both of mine appear when I’m cooking too, particularly if I’m cutting up fruit or veg, although Wispa isn’t keen on parsnip. Tuppence must have asbestos lining: she grabbed a piece of toast which pinged right out of the toaster a couple of days ago and swallowed it quickly before I could grab it. :(
