The Ballad of Maja and Carbón

A mother dog would tell off her pup! I believe Maja is a young dog. I am not advocating a dog fight.
Mother dogs correct their pups until they’re independent, in that very specific context. This is not the same as dogs being responsible for other dogs in their space. Similar to humans, it would inappropriate to expect people to discipline children that were nothing to do with them - it’s up to the guardian to make sure everyone behaves appropriately or manage the space if that’s not possible.

I understand your thinking and I was obviously wrong.

We all made it through dinner, Carbón in his usual spot and Maja in the bathroom. She got snippy with him afterwards when he tried to go back to the sofa, so she had a five minute time out in her carrier. I’m hoping with little breaks like that, where Carbón gets what he wants (or what he’s used to), we’ll shift the balance a bit.

Maja has been very insistent on sitting on me, which is new. I think it’s less affection than saying ‘mine’ to Carbón, who is laying on my bottom half. 🧐

It sounds like they are both a bit unsure of each other, and this can lead to mis-steps in communication. Both dogs will need to feel safe and secure - but also that they are OK in the sense of not doing anything wrong, so lots of positive affirmations for the both of them - separately. Suction baby gates are a god send - you can put them anywhere! Lots of her favourite toys and chews and time spend engaging separately. They will both appreciate "me time" so taking Maja out in the car on trips will be a good idea, so Carbon can completely relax. Other things you can do is a couple of drops of pure lavender oil on her bed before she comes to you - to condition a positive feeling. Any calming supplements for the both of them - something like Nutracalm will help, consider an adaptil plug in as well, although I am not convinced by those!

Thank you for all the great advice!

No car trips as my car is 30 minutes’ walk from my apartment, but Maja needs to go out for a wee twice as often as Carbón, so those can be good relax times for Carbón . We tried that this morning (Maja got a 6 am wee walk and Carbón got peanut butter in his puzzle bowl 😊) and both seemed happy with that.

Maja came with these and Nadine said, ‘Just take a bunch yourself if she stresses you out - I do! ‘ 🤣

Our first night went pretty well. A little crying in her crate here and there, but I gave her a pet and some calm words and she seemed ok with the new arrangement. Carbón was MUCH happier and stayed in bed all night as normal, which he hadn’t done before.

On to day two!

Ok, night number two survived! She was very comfortable in her crate and our now-routine of walking her alone at 6 am worked nicely. She is, however, still bitey towards Carbón and heseems quite down.

I’m trying out leaving her at own apartment right now because tomorrow I’ll need to leave her for a dentist appointment. She looked for her ML, which was a little sad, but that lasted less than a minute. I think she’ll be fine for a short period.

How annoying that she’s still bothering Carbón, but that's a good strategy to give her some home time and sounds like it’s working well for everyone. It’ll be good for everyone to have a little break (even if it’s the dentist)!

Yeah, Carbón isn’t doing so hot, or not as well as I’d like in any case. But he does seem happier when I give him some alone time.

Now that I know Maja does fine in her apartment, I think we’ll add some ‘only Carbón’ walks. We can all walk together to Maja’s place, leave her there for a 30 minute walk with just Carbón, and then pick her up after to walk back to my place.

That may help Carbón…and get my daily walking up to 20 km! 😆
