The Bavarian July Toe and Teeth Challenge - with prize drawing!

I emailed Dorwest late last night and have just received this reply. Any thoughts? xx :)

Hello Helen,

Thank you for getting in contact with us,

Please find the ingredient for the Roast Dinner Toothpaste below :

Active Ingredients: Sage oil and liver flavouring

Other:

Synthetic Clay
Glycerine
Chalk
Pumice
Deionised water
Sodium Benzoate
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
Sage Oil
Liver Flavour

I hope that this helps, and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly,

Kind Regards

Thanks for getting that, Helen, and so quickly.

I wouldn't use a toothpaste with pumice in it daily. I would say it's far too abrasive for dogs' teeth, as they have such thin enamel. Maybe OK for occasional polishing, but not every day.

As I am such a worry wart I emailed them 10 minutes ago and received a very fast response as follows: xx

Hello Helen,

Thank you for getting back to me,

The pumice used in the toothpaste is a fine powder, and for the function of being an abrasive agent to help rid of build-up. However the toothpaste is specifically formulated for dogs and so is still ideal to use.

We do recommend that this product can be used every day, or at least weekly if you are still concerned. You can also use our homoeopathic remedy, Fragaric 3c to soften and aid the removal of tartar. Start by giving one pillule daily for up to a month and then give once a week as a preventative thereafter.

I hope that this helps, but if you do have any further questions please do let me know,

Kind Regards

Heh, they're not exactly going to say it's going to damage the dogs' teeth though, are they?
Thanks for doing this, and if you're happy with it, then by all means continue to use it, but knowing that it contains pumice, I won't be trying it now.
Dog enamel is in the range of <0.1to 0.6mm thick, compared to on human teeth where it is usually 2-4mm thick.

Fiona, do you what the ingredients are in Logic? I can't find them on their own website and there's no contact information either. I'm a little confused now as Dorwest is made in conjunction with Veterinarians as is Logic. Surely vets are not going to help produce anything that might harm dogs teeth. Arrgghh I hate this feeling that I am doing the wrong thing. x

It's under the "professional" tab.

It also lists "mild abrasives", and I couldn't tell you what those are, but the main difference, I think, is that the main action is enzymatic, so with the surfacant you don't actually need to brush at all.

I think everything to do with dogs is a minefield! I can tell you for nothing, I've never looked at ingredients lists for my own toothpaste! :cwl:

Oh me neither, not even for my children :$ OK so mild abrasives must be used in all toothpaste humans and dogs or they wouldn't be so effective, so I am going to stop worrying before I drive myself mad. I am happy with Dorwest and it's results, I also don't use it every day, maybe 3/4 times per week. I'm not going to think about it any more, no, no, no, no!!! I'm not a bad doggie mum :whew: xx

I'm better at "doing" than I am "ticking off". I'm all up to date now!

I keep meaning to say, it makes me laugh every time I do Squidge's teeth because it's so much harder to do hers than the others. She has gaps either side where her adult teeth never came through, so she has those same gummy spaces that puppies do. It means the brush pops into her mouth as I move it back and forth. Apparently this is not an uncommon thing in Labradors, and it certainly doesn't seem to slow her down any when she's eating :D

I’m failing on recording it too, but onto day 12 (12?!) today and I’m going to restart teeth brushing today. We stalled when Kipper was tiny as it was just too exciting, so back to basics and build from there...
we’ve also got my mum’s dog Jambo to stay, so I’m going to start with his teeth too :)

I'm just trying to handle his front paws lots and randomly, even without the treats. The right paw seems to be his favourite to give to me as a sort of royal gift. The left paw is "Mine, mine, mine and you don't get to touch it EVER!" :hmm:

He doesn't realise that the back paws belong to him at at all, so he doesn't care what I do with them.

Tonight we worked on all 4 paws. It was a good session, although I did notice he’s still not entirely comfy with the dremel - I’ve started holding it in one hand while holding a paw with the other. One paw (front left) he’s more sensitive about, so I’m not sure how far we’ll get in the month :D - but I’m still going s-l-o-w-l-y...

I tried teef tonight. Turns out we need to go back to absolute basics. Kipper hasn’t a clue what I’m up to and nor have I. Will gen up with the video @snowbunny shared a few days ago...

For toes, we did all 4 paws and progressed to having the dremel on held in the hand not handling the toes. Short bursts, lots of reinforcement and lots of checking ‘break’s seemed to work well, he bounced back on his bed for the next session and offered his paws with gusto :D
