An update on our personal August challenge (unless maybe I should start a Devonian August Teeth & Nail Challenge, with some sort of turnip-based prize?): Kipper’s nail length on front paws was really starting to stress me, so having ordered the Millers Forge clippers (so sharp! So light!) I thought we’d try them out. We did it outside -different environment from our usual practice, different equipment in clippers rather than dremel, different treats in my pocket rather than in a pot - and I tried one toe, then another, then another... Kipper let me do all front toes nails, he was brilliant. I broke my rules in that I did all 10 relatively quickly and he behaved beautifully, although with his left foot was more reluctant and it definitely wasn’t full consent - more ‘hmm, if you have to...ooh, duck strip!’. But weighing pros (getting nails clipped, managing my stress, being able to focus purely on the exercise for another few weeks) and cons (damage relationship, reduce trust, more stress for Kipper however temporary) I’m satisfied it was the right way to go.
We’ve had a few training sessions since in our usual set up, and it’s going well - now able to gently tap front paw nails with the dremel, and hold the running dremel on the back paw nails. Kipper is very clear, and seems comfortable but I’m taking it really slowly still.
