The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

What a lovely video! I find them so helpful, so thank you for taking the time to make and post them. I remember the horrible school we went to when Snowie was a puppy. You had to get your dog into a down on his side and then stand on the leash (so he couldn’t lift his head) and shout SETTLE! It seemed odd to me at the time, but I didn’t know any better. So lovely to watch a kind, calm approach to training. Thank you!

Meanwhile, while I was watching your video, Snowie was snoring away! :)

I hope all is going well with Donna and your dad.

I've always found the training to settle with treats a bit counter productive, as the anticipation always seems to spoil it anyway.
Very true. I'm so reliant on treats that I'd wanted to try both ways of training a settle - now I have video evidence for myself that NO TREATS is the way to go. I had a really good session with our trainer today for a 'treat free' plan for a lot of Carbon's behaviours. There may be a (hopefully temporarily) unhappy Spanish gentleman in town. :sneaky:

Thank you all for giving me an excuse to share them and have some fun with the editing. :giggle:

That's down to SDTI and our trainer Donna Hill: 100% R positive approach. It's so much nicer than all the "be your dog's boss" stuff that I was taught with Duncan and Brogan.

I hope Donna is as well as is possible.

She's actually doing really well! The experimental therapy is doing her a world of good. It's not a cure, but it has improved her quality of life leaps and bounds over what it was in November. She's still not getting out hardly at all, but one of her goals is to make it to the beach, so we'll keep trying. She still has 24 hour care, with each person doing 24 hour shifts (8pm to 8 pm). I have three shifts this week, which is why our SD filming was at Donna's. It's actually quite easy as she's a lovely lady to spend time with, except for that fact that I'm not very good at keeping her entertained - I'm quite boring compared to Dancing Donna.

I am proud of myself that she's taught me to play Yahtzee. Can canasta be far behind?

Wowwwww!!! That is The Most Stunning photo! Are the colors true or photoshopped?
I'm low tech - no photoshop, just the basic corrections available in Apple Photos. Because Carbon is black I do lighten up the shadows which means the rest of the photo comes out lighter - it was actually a slightly overcast day. Ice plant which is all over the coast is in bloom right now so those crazy green/red colours are true to life. It's really gorgeous. :giggle:

I bet that was interesting, I'd like to hear more.
We had a discussion about chaining - and getting over my guilt for not treating Carbon for everything! :sneaky:

I'm sure @snowbunny or @Beanwood could explain chaining much better, but the way I understand it is that instead of using treats, you can use the next cue as the reward. I already do this on the fairly rare occasions that he pulls on lead: he needs to come back to my side in heel position before we go forward, so the reward is that we start to move forward again instead of a food reward. I have a harder time imagining how to chain in a rewarding way for "leave it", for example. That's what I need to work on this week, along with continuing to condition the settle.
