I asked our trainer about this and she said no, no lead. She wants him to it be his choice to stay or go and not be restrained. She's VERY R+!To begin with it was on nlead and at length of lead.

Also her thing is that if he's popping up, it means I'm upping criteria too soon or giving him confusing cues. If I set him up for success correctly, he doesn't need a lead.
Of course if we were out of the garden and in public, he may need the lead while training just for safety.
