The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

Thank you all again for sending so many positive vibes our way. The good news is that Carbon seems so much more himself today: lots of happy waggy tail and bouncing like a kangaroo before meals. His pain has either faded significantly or the good drugs are doing their work.

The trip to the clinic this afternoon seemed like a complete waste except for the fact that it made me walk back and forth to my car for the second time today. It's nearly an hour round trip walk from my apartment to the garage where my car lives now and I really need the exercise. So...yay?!

Otherwise it was kind of a wash. The vet at the clinic insisted that Carbon was totally fine and that the operation absolutely didn't need to be reversed. His blood loss is "normal" and so are his blood levels. This was the same information that had my regular vet saying he most likely needed surgery in the next two days. I'm completely confused but must admit that as I don't trust the clinic anymore, I'm in my regular vet's camp on this one. On the other hand, Carbon is clearly doing better than he was yesterday, so...?

We didn't finish the appointment at the clinic until 6pm, so his regular vet (Dr Patzak) was gone for the day by then. I will discuss this all with her again first thing tomorrow morning.

The clinic did confirm that the stones were made of xanthine crystals, so we also need to get a plan together to tackle that. For now I'm feeding lots of protein (fish/eggs) and low purine veggies and fruits with sweet potato. I figure he needs extra calories to heal and build himself up again. No objections from Carbon over the more frequent meals.

Oh and remember the pants that I fitted out for him at Dr. Patzak's request? He pooped in them on the way back from Dr. Patzak's office this morning. He'd already had two BM's but yeah...just squatted and pooped in his classy black ladies bikini briefs, in front of the castle no less. That's my boy! 😂

My vet just left a small hole before the penis and I don't remember any bleeding whatsoever.
Carbon has a 5" or so incision along the top/tip of his penis where they went into the bladder and then the incision at the base of his penis for the new urination opening is about 6", including 1-2" for the actual opening. Lots of bleeding out of the incision at the base, none at all for the bladder incision. The new urination opening is nasty but it does look better today, for which I'm grateful.

I’m sorry you’re still getting mixed messages. It’s hard when you don’t trust the clinic, but at least you feel you can trust your usual vet.

i hope Carbon is even more back to normal tomorrow. Go Carbon! :dug:

Nothing like that at all. Perhaps they were trying to clear the blocked urethra? Sounds quite barbaric :'(

Gosh what an ordeal. Glad that Carbón has some bounce back. I’m sure he’s loving the extra meals. Are you still thinking he should have another surgery? Or are you waiting to see what the Doc says tomorrow? It does all sound quite confusing.

It is VERY confusing. This morning is he doing swimmingly, however. He had zoomies before breakfast and our wee walk got extended to a whole walk around the old town just because he wanted to keep going. I can't see putting him through another op at this point but we will see what his vet (Dr Patzak) says.

Just talked to Carbon's regular vet, Dr. Patzak. She feels a bit better about the situation since the clinic has said he's doing normally after the original op, however she still wants to monitor him closely. He gets a reprieve today, but we'll go back in for another check tomorrow morning.

For my part, I'm rather relieved we get a day off. I can catch up with work and not have to schlep back and forth to my car. There are many lovely things about living in the old town, but the half hour walk to my car from my front door is not one of them. Yet another of many reasons to miss Cornwall!
