The man on the phone

Ages ago I joined a gundog for novices FB group , I rarely post because frankly the majority are not my cup of tea, not so much helpful as judgemental which I really dislike . However, one man appeared to be very helpful to others , a trainer/owner of several Labs , and so I decided to message him to ask for an ` outside the box ` opinion on Castration , wish I hadnt  He invited me to ring him , so nothing ventured , I did and came off the phone angry . You know when you want to speak your mind , being quite rude but courtesy gets in the way ? Yep , that was me . He started off saying that I was obviously being far too soft on my dog , that I had to instil the`` I`m on charge and what I say goes `` ethos . He then said that I was doing wrong to allow Reubs to sniff around on walks , that he must stay at heel at all times and that if he didnt obey , he needed ` reminding who was boss ` . At this point , I came close to putting the phone down but I let him carry on , he said that Reuben must not be allowed to meet and greet other dogs, at all , just remain at my heel all the time . He went on to say that positive training never ever worked , that dogs need to be constantly reminded that they do not have a choice , that they are subservient , even saying that when one of his dogs performs as he asks, he never ever praises the dog , never uses treats, just taps it on the head . I cut the call short at this point , wondering what sort of miserable life his dogs must lead , then this afternoon I watched Reubs sniffing around , coming running to me for a fuss and a treat and thought , Bollocks to you mate , Reubs might not be your cup of tea , but he is mine and he is happy xxx

Joy and I met a young couple on our walk today, say early 30s. They had a gorgeous Yellow Lab boy with them, obviously also young. He and Joy had spotted each other, done all the normal dog etiquette sussing each other out, were very clearly comfortable with each other and were about to launch into play mode when his owners called him back and put him in a 'Sit'. They clicked and rewarded promptly, but there was no patting or hugging or 'Yesss! Good Boy!' or anything really fun. We were in a safe place, so I asked if our dogs could say 'Hello' as they so obviously wanted to. They allowed it and straight away it was Playtime! Their dog and Joy launched into full on totally happy Labrador play in the snow. What could be lovlier to stand and watch for a while? Except we didn't get to. They wouldn't allow it. No explanation, they just called their beautiful lively good natured young lad back and put him on lead.
GGJ was most disappointed. So was I. I wonder now if they are of the same school of thought as this man you were speaking to, Kate. What a miserable existence, so lacking in fun and joy (or Joy, for that matter!):(

Argh. What a dick. Dogs need fun and joy in their lives! If seeing your dog living life to the full doesn't make you happy, then you are an awful human.

He reminds me of the sole man in my "medical mums" dog group who always posts "helpful" replies to new dog owners including advice referencing cruel "training" techniques like force fetch. He makes me sick. And he is a doctor. No thanks.

It wasn't polite to not tell you why they were calling it off, but try not to take it personally. Some reasons they may have done so like having someplace to be or concerns about their dog getting too crazy and accidentally hurting himself or Joy, or noticing something else in the environment that might cause an issue.

Saying this as someone who often gets that look of "oh just let him play" when I clip on Carbon's lead. Sometimes when I get The Look, I think, "Oh, you have no idea what I've just saved you from!" :sneaky:

However that's a far cry from Kate's caller who is basically saying "no off duty time ever". And using the whole 'must dominate the lower creatures" argument. Ugh.
