Today, he was a shocker !

Only three weeks ago , we took Reuben and Nelly to meet Emily and Carbon at their house near Padstow . We took them to the beach and I was so proud of Reubs, he was so well behaved , yes he ran and ran, but he wasn't manic and he came back to the whistle every time . Cut to today ! Well all I can say is that he was the total opposite !
I don't want to make excuses but I think it was total overload for the lad , we had Debbie and Silas with us, plus the beach was more busy than last time, due to the early Easter holidays . It started off well , Emily and I walked the dogs and Silas down to the waters edge , Reubs and Silas went in, jumping waves and having a total blast , then Reuben and Carbon had their usual zoomies around , still all good . Back to our camp and I had to put Reuben on lead as there were more and more people coming onto the beach , lots of children and lots of balls and frisbies , plus many other dogs . OMG, he turned into a complete and utter lunatic , pulling on his lead, crying and generally being a right royal pain in the bum ! Carbon, by contrast , was good as gold, very calm and quite sedate by comparison to my young maniac ! We stayed for two hours , two long hours , during which time Reuben had dug the most enormous hole right in front of me , to the amusement of people passing by , how I didn't fall into it I don't know ! He covered my legs, filled my trainers and Debbies handbag with sand, by which time I had got past caring and just wanted to go, now please ! Emily invited us back to hers for a drink , and within minutes , Reubs had chewed the tail of Carbons pheasant toy , time to go home ! To be honest , I was setting him up to fail , dogs, children , toys, all too much for a seven month old puppy, but I have put this in here because he behaved like a teenage delinquent !
Note to self , buy a new harness and don't go to a busy beach ! He now sleeps , looking so innocent xx

Now wouldn’t it be dull if they were angels the whole time?! What Reuben’s done here is given you a gift - the gift of comparison and sympathy bedded in experience, so that in a few month’s time you can say ‘goodness, he’s come on so much!’ And also you can comfort the puppy owners that come afterwards and say ‘don’t worry, Reuben had his slightly naughty days when he was 7 months - this too shall pass’ and then nod sagely

Thinking about it ( now that normal service has resumed ! ) I was probably expecting too much of him , it was a big ask really xx
I'm sure you know that better than all of us!
7 months, gosh, brings back memories of Cassie at that age :facepalm:, at a force free training class. Complete nightmare, off the scale with enthusiasm to engage with the world !!She did a massive wee of equine proportions in the middle of the church hall, stopping the class for 10 minutes. This was a very bad thing. :donttalk:. Then at some point she managed to mug the trainer, also a bad thing. Then she headbanged me practically reducing me to tears in front of everyone. Such happy days. But oh how far we have come!
No way at that age could I have contemplated taking her to a busy Cornish beach :shake:

I strongly suspect they all behave like that around that age. Molly's first summer fell when she was 10 months-ish and after she'd stolen a few buckets and spades and invaded a few picnics I decided she'd have to be on a longline at the beach. By the following summer she was fine.

Yes...... I have just been remembering Joy at seven months. That was when we were just coming to the end of puppy classes and I was still the only one wearing gardening gloves throughout! Her recall was spot on but everything else was a bit hit and miss and as for Down Stay for the duration of a whole minute....... No chance! She had also destroyed three beds and was on her fourth lead. If I was inconsiderate to stop for a chat with someone whilst she was on lead she would either turn into a bucking bronco puppy or chew her lead or both! Thanks for your post Kate, I think I'd forgotten what she was like as a pup and it's good to look back and appreciate how far we've come!

Half the problem is that because Reuben is so big , its easy to forget that he is just a puppy ! I tend to cast back and remember Sam as being this calm gentle giant of a dog , that I could take anywhere but then also remember that he could also be a shocker at this age, following everyone on the beach, nicking balls right left and centre ! Rose coloured glasses indeed ! xx

*snigger* ohhhh Reuben!

Could be worse.. you could have a 3 year old who sometimes acts like that. Not that I would know about that :shake:
Or even a five year old who steals children's footballs? I mean, not that I would know anything about that, but maybe, just sometimes it happens.... somewhere on a Cornwall beach.

Don't stress @kateincornwall , sorry you didn't enjoy the beach as much as you had hoped, but you'll look back in a few days and feel a lot better about it.

I really didn't think he was naughty at all today, just full of beans. The hole he dug under Kate was truly magnificent. Nelly was digging holes too, big enough to stick her tiny fluffy head into and then come up with a snoot full of sand. Reuben was a delight to watch gallop across the sand and play with Silas.

Carbon was completely enamoured of Silas. He's had a little exposure here and there to children, but it was like he finally figured out how wonderful an active little boy could be. I got the stink eye all afternoon after everyone left. "You made my boy friend AND dog friend leave, dumb foster lady!!" Carbon finally just went into the bedroom to pout while I was working. He never does that.

He can do a bit of stink eye, though, as I was very proud of him. Two hours on the beach and I didn't have to apologise to a single person. That's a record! Usually it's 10 minutes on the beach and apologising to multiple people!

@kateincornwall , I bet the next time we hit the beach, it will be back to form: Reuben the angel and Carbon the cheeky ball thief.

I really feel for you, Maisy was a shocker for pinching children's balls and frisbees. I once paid a small boy £5 to get a new ball, he was crying so much. Shes been good lately but I still always carry some cash on me just in case. Reuben will grow out of it (probably) Maisy was 2 when she got less interested in other people's toys so not long to wait :rofl:
