Do you trim the fur in between the pads on their feet? I've never trimmed Ella's and have never had an issue (touch wood) but when it came up in conversation with a friend, she looked at me like

No, not Molly's feet or our previous lab, I can't see any need for it.
Our Springer though had real trouble with cysts between his toes which he would chew raw, so his foot fur was clipped. Obviously the coat of a springer and most long haired dogs is totally different to that of a lab, far softer and absorbent, which has always seemed strange to me.
Both labs and spaniels are gun dogs, often expected to go in water to retrieve yet the lab has a tight oily water repellent coat while the spaniel has a soft silky thoroughly absorbent coat. Odd

No, I never trim the hair between their toes. No need here. Luna's is really thick. What sort of dog does your friend have?

The reason was that the hair can get matted and bits could get stuck in it. I play with Ella's all the time and it never seems to be matted so I've never worried. Although, I was worried that I might have been the only one

My sister trims the hair between her cocker's toes because otherwise he picks up all sorts of stuff in it. He also has no traction of her solid floors when his toe hair is long

Nope, never given it a thought.
Cassie loves her feet, spends a lot of time nibbling and licking them. I do wonder sometimes if something is troubling her but if it is she sorts it out herself. Or maybe it's just a hobby.
It's not like she chews them raw or anything, just sort of plays with them!

I noticed only yesterday how tufty the hair is between Coco's toes, but he's never had a problem with muck & detritus. I won't be trimming it.

I trimmed the underpaw fur on my old doggie to help him get a grip on hard floors. But we don’t do Obi’s even though he has heaps of it.
