Torn nail

On Friday I noticed Harley limping a bit in the evening. I checked her over and called the vets as couldn’t see anything. They suggested metacam and rest. I though it might be stiffness as she does occasionally get this. She also had a long walk with her dog walker as I couldn’t walk far.
I managed to find the issue yesterday morning - she’s torn part of her nail off. I’ve cleaned it up as much as she would let me, but not sure if I should just monitor it or pop to the vets tomorrow. She wasn’t bearing any weight on it this morning. What do you think?

Poor Harley. It looks pretty clean and calm, but I reckon if she’s still not putting weight on it tomorrow I’d go to the vets so they can clean and check it. Hope it’s not bothering her too much when not weight bearing xxx

That looks sore, but then again anything with nails I always think does. Hope she is feeling better and managing to put some weight on it by today.

That crack looks quite deep, does the nail look quite firmly attached? I imagine the vet will want to sedate Harley and remove part of that nail. Poor Harley, hope it's not too painful for her!

Poor Harley. Harry my cousins terrier cross is forever busting his dew claw. He will lick at it for a bit and if he catches it he'll hold his paw up but it usually comes off when he's running for a ball. A few months a go he bust a dew claw and it didn't come off like usual. I was concerned it might have got a bit of an infection as he was bothering with it more than normal so we took him to the vet. I should probably add my cousin is quite squeamish so I have to deal with injuries, injections etc  The vet had a look and whipped the dew claw off there and then. No sedation nothing. I was quite pleased actually as it would've been more of an ordeal for Harry had he had to go through sedation etc. this way it was over in seconds. Obviously I had to hold him as my cousin left the building never mind the room when the vet warned he may squeal a little bit. Harry, typical terrier hard as nails, just looked at her while she did it probably wondering why I was holding him in a bear hug.

I always have medical grade Manuka honey in stock for such issues. It seems to work. When S&S had their major falling out a few months ago Scout had a minor wound on his forehead and had kindly tried to pierce his brothers ear so Scott had a wound, bordering on a puncture wound, either side of the tip of his ear. I bathed with cooled boiled water and applied Manuka liberally four times a day. Healed up within two weeks. Had the wounds not improved after a few days I'd have gone to the vet but with my two if a vet trip can be avoided it makes life a lot easier. Obviously as it's Harley's foot a sock would probably be required to stop the licking of the honey. That's why I like using Manuka it doesn't matter if they lick it.

It does seem to be firmly attached, but she won’t let me go near it anymore. I think it is really sore as she isn’t weight bearing. She’s quite a stoic dog so rarely shows pain. She also isn’t keen on vets so if they want to remove it, it will be under sedation. I think we will need to pop to the vets tomorrow.
She was bugging me to go for a walk earlier so we took her to the field and kept her on lead with no ball throwing. She seemed to enjoy it (and carried her ball) but was still limping a lot. We only done one lap around the field as worried it might get worse. Shes currently snuggled up to me and her paw keeps twitching every now and then 😢

Finn has this so now and then. I take Finn to the trimmers. They are familiar with toenails. Is it possible for you to pay a visit at the trimmers? They can have a look and know if you should go to the vet! Or do you say trim salon...?

Can you trim it as short as possible? Just thinking that she’s limping cos it probably bends when she walks, and that must be painful.

Snowie ripped his dew claw a few weeks ago. He then licked it right off. Loads of blood. I applied betadine over about 3 days and it’s growing back now.

I’d only go to the vet if you think the limping is a worry.

I’m definitely taking her to the vets tomorrow as she’s still not weight bearing all the time and it’s obviously sore. @Anne123 unfortunately she hates anyone touching her paws except me, and at the minute won’t let me touch it or get near.
@edzbird she has had metacam Friday, Saturday and Sunday and still clearly in pain so definitely taking her to the vets.

Poor girl and poor you, it’s stressful. Hopefully it’s dealt with sensitively and she’s not too uncomfortable tomorrow xxx

Xena gets this from time to time, but it's never affected her walking and she's always been happy to put weight on it. I just keep it free of gunk, and when the nail starts to really split I pull it off, no drama. The first time it happened I really worried (I'd made a post on the other forum at the time) and took her to the vet - they just tugged it off! So that's what I do now when it happens. Obviously Harley's nail is giving her a bit more bother, but with any luck you'll have a simple fix like I did.
