UK ticks - spring’s here!

Oh heck , already ? I usually give the dogs a few months break from flea and tick treatment but maybe I had better start thinking about it now , its so hard to spot them on black dogs as you have discovered Helen , thank goodness you saw it . We walk in deer country too x

I find it easier to see ticks on Willow than Squidge and Shadow. Because they are slightly reddy-brown, they show up clearly against her jet black. Whereas Shadow has blotches of darker skin, being a yellow with black pigment, but is less uniform so they can camouflage easier. And Squidge’s hair is so thick, there’s no chance of seeing them if they get in through that.

So far I’ve found three this year, one on each Lab. Squidge and Willow both let me know where theirs were - Willow was fussing her foot where it had attached and Squidge was scratching her ear a lot - it was crawling around the inside. Ick. I think it’s going to be a bad year for them.

Yep , dont want to go through that again , pesky little critters
Can you take Nexgard too? 😁

I've never used anti-tick stuff on Carbon except when we were in Spain and that was just a side benefit of the anti-Leish collar. I need to go to the vet here in Cornwall anyway in the next couple weeks to get more heart worm tabs, any recommendations of what I should ask for against ticks?

It’s one of those localized things I understand, so they’ll have a sense of what works best on your local ticks. Our vets recommend Bravecto as the local ticks have developed immunity to many of the other treatments.

Thanks for the advice. 😊

Carbon's never had a tick here in Cornwall during the same time period, but that may be because I'm not a big one for woods. However we certainly go where there are livestock, so maybe we've just been lucky. I will ask the vet for advice when I go in for the heart worm tabs.
If Carbon has never picked up a tick where you are living, then I would caution against treating him with Bravecto or similar.

Merlin has picked up two ticks already this week, even though it is freezing cold here. It was warm a week or so ago though, so I guess the little blighters woke up then. I've order the Scalibor collar for him - I don't like using it, but our woods are crawling with ticks in the spring.
