Vaccinations

Harley missed her annual boosters due to lockdown. They were due in October, but as she is so wary of the vets and I am not allowed in, I decided to delay. I phoned the vets today to book her on and they said we will probab have to start again as if she were a puppy. I really don’t feel this is necessary so suggested a titre test. They said I would have to request this at least 3 weeks in advance so they could order a test in, but would need to discuss this with the vet first. Our appointment isn’t until 12th Jan. What would you do?

I am sure in the past I have gone well over the due date and just had a booster. They are probably correct that you should start again, but I would probably ignore that these days, unless you have any of the diseases in your area.

I would be wary of your vet (nurse?) advice Naya.
We weren't late so I haven't heard it from our vets, but I think its common knowledge that protection doesn't just stop.
I had to repeat Lilly's primary course because the first brand given by the breeders vet was different to our own vet. I think this is quite a different scenario.
It sounds like they are making it hard for you to tire test.

I was under the impression that the vaccinations were only so regular as young puppies because of the presence of maternal antibodies.
In any event, I wouldn’t be restarting the vaccines. In shelters they don’t give a puppy course of vaccinations for adult dogs!

I think it's only Lepto you are supposed to give yearly, 2 months is how long they can be late, that's my understanding.

You could ring around other practices who keep titre kits in stock. Bramble is currently registered with three vets!

Was this just for rabies or for the other stuff (DHLPP though I'm getting the acronym wrong)?

For "other stuff", Carbon was over four months late this year for various reasons. Both the vet in the UK and my vet here in Germany said it was no biggie. When he could handle it, he then got the shots.

Waiting 3 weeks for a titre is goofy. It's a blood test that gets sent to a lab. I've had it done three times in three different countries - no waiting for any of them. I'm thinking the person you talked to doesn't know what you want but didn't want to admit it.

In shelters they don’t give a puppy course of vaccinations for adult dogs!
They did at the shelter Carbon came from. He and poor Paul were like pincushions there for a while. I guess it depends on the house vet's philosophy and how much money the shelters have?

Thanks all. I’m going to find her vaccination card to see what it is that she had last year. I think the 2 months was up last week, but will double check. My vets are usually pretty good, but found this receptionist abrupt and not helpful at all. The fact that they can’t see her for another 2 weeks is out of my control. I will call other vets though and ask about titre tests. Thanks all.

Molly is due for her booster vaccination but when I phoned the vet today the receptionist said they were only seeing emergencies (tier 4) and then added that the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has said that vets can delay booster vaccinations in adult dogs for up to 6 months without problems.

We went to the vets today as Harley has conjunctivitis and several new lumps. Whilst we were there the vet mentioned her vaccinations and asked if we wanted them done today. I explained what I was told and she said that was rubbish and that she only needed 2 of the boosters and kennel cough as the other isn’t due for 2 years, and about restarting, she said we didn’t need to as within the 3 month suggested period, so we had it done there and then. She said if she was a young dog they may restart, but as Harley is 7 that they would continue as normal if within 4/5 months. She’s going to talk to the receptionists and update them.
In terms of Harleys lumps, we are going to do biopsies in 4 weeks as now has 6 which are quite large, one on top of her front shoulder and she’s limping more often on that side.
We are also going to do bloods as she keeps putting on weight and we’ve cut her food down a lot. I monitor everything she’s having and she’s put on 1.5kg in the last month which doesn’t make sense. She’s still quite lively during the day, but can be a bit lethargic as night comes in which is unusual for her, plus she is becoming a bit of a scavenger which she usually isn’t. It’s all so worrying.
