How is Reuben? X

Thank you for asking . He is currently stretched out on my bed resting , which is good . In himself, he is quite chipper, ate his breakfast ( no surprise there ) . I think , said with optimism , that his limp is slightly better but he isnt going anywhere today . We have a decent sized garden and this will do for a day or two more and if no noticeable improvement by tomorrow , he will have to go to the Vets . I did speak to the nurse yesterday, she had a word with the Vet who said that had it been the same leg, she would have got him in for an Xray but for now to give him the paracetamol they prescribed and rest him up , taking him in if it didnt improve in a couple of days .
I just felt so low yesterday , other stuff going on and this was the icing on the cake really . I`m going to stop all ball and dummy retrieving for a while , he will be happy if I let him carry a ball , thank you xxx

Nothing. You are doing everything right for the lad. He's a active boy and is bound to pick up knocks & strains. Just like we do.

When Joy was younger we also seemed to be always at the vet's for something. I mentioned that they would be sick of the sight of us and the vet said that Joy was a fit, healthy young dog and that it's not unusual for dogs like this to go through a phase of needing frequent vet visits. He likened it to a lively and inquisitive child starting school and needing frequent GP appointments. I felt a bit better after this, and certainly the vet visits are less often now (she says, crossing her fingers!) It sounds like Reuben is the same.

Reubs hurt his leg so he rested that leg and the other got stressed. Everything's out of balance and now the other legs sore. After an injury it tak s a while to get everything back to normal. Just rest will improve things just take it steady

Thanks all , I felt so rotten about it yesterday but I know it isnt any fault of mine or his really , he is just a tank of a lad We had our lovely gardener here this afternoon to cut the grass , he loves Reuben but we had to get him indoors as he was looning about ( Reuben , not the man ! ) . I think his limp is improving slowly , thank goodness and again thanks for your kind words xx

Limping was mostly the problem with Joy too. It sounds like Reuben and she are very similar around balls. My vet advised that rather than going for distance all the time with ball games, I should 'mix it up a bit' and do some more difficult throws into long grass and bushes, where she really had to search for the ball. He said that this would use up more brain and sniffing power and stretch her even more than the running, without putting strain on her joints. To this day I start our playing sessions with a few long throws then go into 'Find it!' which she absolutely loves, even more I think than the long runs to fetch. It's also been a lovely thing for me, seeing her get so clever at it, as well as an interesting challenge to keep finding ways of making it a bit more difficult. It has helped me to see that not only does she have boundless energy, she is also a very clever little dog who absolutely loves having to use her nose and her brain. Maybe worth a try with your lovely boy?xxx

@Candy this is what I already do with Reubs On some walks , I dont even bring a ball or dummy into play at all, just have one in my bag as a distraction in case its needed . Most times , he is very happy to do short blinds and have to use his brain, nose and my directions when I throw into rough ground . He seems much improved this morning , I have been giving him the turmeric paste as he cant have NSAIDs and so fingers crossed , a few more days and he will be let lose again xxx

Good news @kateincornwall. I think the golden paste is a good natural remedy to help with swelling when used in combination with the rest. Especially as poor Reuben can't have NSAIDs. X

Yes, I was referring to Reuben. But if you want to jump in the waves, I'll hold your stuff!

Actually when I went to get my hair cut this week in Newquay and arrived ridiculously early, Carbon and I took a walk on the beach to fill the time. As we were coming back up, we crossed paths with a BIG group of people going down to swim. I really admired that!

My brother has a new freundin (yes, another one ) and she’s keen on wild swimming. He goes with her - eep!

Zaba now can’t have a ball except for swimming as the sudden stops cause him sprained hocks. I think Candy’s idea of throwing/hiding it in long grass is a good one.

Happy to report that the limp is no more x I have always thrown his ball or dummy into the rough as he adores having to find it , I make him sit facing me as I throw, so its a blind retrieve but I have even restricted this for a couple of days . I think he is just a young very enthusiastic dog who is driven and passionate about retrieving and therefore tends to be somewhat tank like in his approach He will be meeting up with his best pal on Saturday when Emily and Carbon come over , wonderful chaos
