This weekend has been awful! 15 degrees and 15ml of rain both days! Hail and flash flooding!

We are having a huge weather disaster here in Canada. BC has had record-breaking rainfall, leading to massive flooding and mudslides. Hundreds of people have been trapped on highways, they are slowly getting them rescued by helicopters. I’m not sure they are all rescued yet - this started Sunday night. The main highway east-west across BC has been snapped in half in places…it will likely take months to fix. One town has been completely evacuated. It’s going to be very difficult getting goods that normally come via trucks and rail from Vancouver across Canada because both highways and railways are a mess - broken and washed out due to mudslides and floods.
Meanwhile the same system brought us winter rather abruptly here. We had a big blizzard last night with high winds and about a foot of snow. My hubby is away so guess who got to do all the clearing of snow from the driveway so I could go to work today?

There have been some flooding events in BC before but I don’t believe there’s been anything of this magnitude, where several communities have been hit at once, before. At least not as far back as I can remember, anyway. They are not out of danger yet, there’s still more flooding and evacuations to come. My OH’s uncle, who lives in Merrit, BC has now been evacuated, along with that entire town (7000 people) as their waste treatment plant has failed. Plus bridges in the town have been damaged. This is the same town that faced evacuation from fires last summer. Not a great year for BC that’s for sure. 😕

This is horrendous @Lisa , just catching up on the news. The scale of damage is just mindboggling. The BBC news is reporting that people in various towns (Sumas Prairie and Yarrow are the ones I've looked at) are being told to just leave immediately and not wait for further news - lots of damaged transport routes, pumping stations and water treatment plants. Just awful, poor people.

The animals is a good question, particularly livestock. There is a big area which used to be a lake but is now farmland, with lots of cattle and poultry ranches there. It is currently under immediate evacuation as pumps which will keep the water out are failing. But people don’t want to leave their livestock. It’s really awful. :huh:

Closer to home, this is the current view out my window. Note my beautifully shovelled/snow blown driveway. Wow that was a lot of work yesterday! I had to do it twice, in the morning and at night, the second time to clear off the drifts at the top and bottom of the drive. At some point yesterday a neighbour came by and cleaned it up a bit with his snowblower, too, but more drifted up by the end of the day when I got home from work. I certainly enjoyed my dinner last night! And snuggling under my blanket with a cuppa.
