I was wondering if the cold weather alters the odour of things, maybe makes it less powerful?

They said that it more or less blanks the smells out, and that's why sometimes they go do lalley, because their world isn't like it normally is and they are not getting the scent the same.

Like Joy Cass loves searching things out and she is very busy with her nose to the ground in the snow. I love that I can see what she's tracking (most of the time!),
it's like for once we are experiencing the same world

It was -5 in the Sahara in the morning when we were in Morocco. I honestly thought it was not possible to feel colder

-5 here thismorning, now warmed up to a comfortable (?!!) -3. It's sunny though and everything is incredibly beautiful, made even better by the fact that for the first time in about seven weeks I've been able to walk fast enough to warm up, so GGJ and I had a magical walk today. A few photos, what looks like snow is infact a very heavy frost. Joy had to do lots of sniffing!

OH has just been out to de-ice his car and reports that the ice has melted & re-frozen, making the pavements & local road treacherous. Sorry dogs. We are not venturing out in that.

I'm embarrassed at how badly we are coping with the cold here, it is +2 °C just now - nothing like what you've got in the UK, Europe or Canada. They claim to be gritting the roads and yet there's chaos and accidents every morning. The side roads are not gritted. The pavements neither. We don't have snow, just thin ice. Oh stop being moaning Minnie.

I know exactly what you mean @edzbird , it was treacherous here yesterday and got worse over the day with black ice everywhere when I walked the boys (separately) in the afternoon.
At bedtime I could hardly get across the patio to take them for last wees.
Luckily it’s warmed up overnight and this mornings walk was more doable.

Luckily I am on a planned annual leave day, so don't have to worry about going anywhere at the moment.
Temp is -1°C and beautiful big fat flakes of snow.

What temperature would give cause for concern re walking a Labrador? Googling is a bit vague on the subject but I'm guessing pretty cold because of the Canadian heritage.

Yes I have wondered this this week in relation to Red’s paws . I have seen Labradors in coats but we’ve never thought a coat necessary due to the nature of a Labrador’s coat.

I am actually considering getting Cassie a coat if we get another very cold snap like this. She doesn't have the thick under layer that many Labs do, and my house isn't very warm and the kitchen where she sleeps is chilly overnight. She's looked and felt cold when I've come down in the mornings this week.

I don't think she needs one outside though, I think if she is moving she's ok.

I would guess @David that it would depend on the age and health status of the dog concerned. A good zoomie session soon warms them up I'm sure.

That’s interesting about Cassie's coat @Selina27 . Ripple has the classic Labrador double coat and is always warm to the touch. Toffee is opposite with a single coat and is cold to cuddle, in the winter I don’t like him going in the water as he comes out shivering and shaking.

I don’t think I’d buy him a coat though, he runs about on his walks and then comes home and sits by the fire. Overnight he has his blankets and I don’t let the house get too cold, he could, of course, always cuddle up with Ripple (very unlikely Ripple would tolerate that though).

Joy has the double coat and always feels warm to the touch if you push your fingers through the top coat and down to the soft fur underneath. I don't actively encourage her to swim in freezing weather but she will still choose to go charging into any available water, so I have checked her after this and she's still warm and pretty much dry next to her skin. She's surprisingly tough for such a small and gentle dog. She's also great for warming cold hands on!
