Mum and Dad live in Port Douglas, in far north Queensland. Cyclone Jasper is expected to cross the border on Wednesday, 60km north of where they live and is expected to be category 3 at the time. It's all a little worrying but they're pretending to be cool, calm and collected about the whole thing.

Hope everyone is safe.

On our first 40 degree day of the summer I mostly kept the doors closed to keep the house cool. In the middle of the day I opened them to let Chewie out for a wee and the silly bugger lay down on the baking pavers. 😱 I made him come inside...

We are heading to Townsville and then onto Magnetic Island on Friday night for a very much anticipated 2 week holiday. It looks like Jasper will hit further North so I'm hoping we can still go 🀞

I hope your Mum and Dad are ok @Emily

We're supposed to be heading to mum and dads on the 21st.

I'm obviously worried about them and their home first but I am nervous about our Christmas holiday too.

The worst part is that the cyclone is likely to hit at the same time as the King tide so the storm surge could be the biggest threat.

It is 7.15pm and still 37 degrees

Lovely inside with the air-con. Maxx says 'c'mon hoomans, it's play time'

Rowan has been so irritable these last few days. I guess its the heat, plus impatience re Christmas? I don't know but its been tough. We had a 30min screaming meltdown on the street this morning because he was feeling ambivalent about preschool/leaving me. There I am in my bloody reindeer pyjamas being screamed at by a distraught child ..

Definitely that time of year. My nearly 8yr old cried last night because I "beat him out of the room" (apparently I walked out quicker 🀷?). Long year, hot weather, we're all tired.

Hang in there

Well, that's it. The holiday is cancelled 😭😭

Port Douglas is still completely cut off by road and they don't estimate the public being able to drive from Cairns to PD until mid to late Jan.

There are constant landslides across the road and they're using helicopters to fly in food etc.

So now we get to break the news to the kids. We were all so looking forward to Christmas with mum and dad (plus there's the logistical nightmare of all of the Santa presents already being there).

I know there are plenty of people worse off so I feel bad complaining but we're so sad 😞

I am so sorry your long made plans have had to be cancelled and I don’t envy you telling the children. I thought of you yesterday when the news reports showed the landslides and crocodiles swimming openly and wondered whether you’d be able to go.

I'm really sorry Emily, I've been thinking about you. The news here (Magnetic Island) is full of terrible stories up further north. Having to cancel a much anticipated holiday is truly gut-wrenching; you work hard all year and need the down time. I hope you can find another destination but last-minute will be so hard.

How very disappointing for you all, I did see Port Douglas on TV it looked horrific. Perhaps you can cheer the children by getting them to help planning a 'now' Christmas and telling them there will be a second one later. Your poor parents will be so sad, are they safe?

We are in the middle of some really windy conditions. We have 2 boat sailings a day, it did sail this morning. The rest of the week, up to christmas eve (there's no sailings on christmas day anyway) is all red "Subject to delay and cancellation". It's for both passenger and freight. There's going to be a lot of spoiled christmases.
