Weird lump

15 days ago I found a tiny lump on Hugo’s head, I actually thought it was a tick and brought him in to the vet and they said it wasn’t a tick but maybe a skin tag or scab and they had made it bleed when trying to figure out if it was a tick. He didn’t see a vet for this, just one of the nurses.

I actually forgot about it until tonight when I was petting his head and I felt it and it has grown. I tried to get a photo of it but it’s hard to get a clear photo. The base of it is skin coloured but the head is black and flakey..? Super strange and unsure what to make of it. Sadly I can’t get into my vet until Monday, 6 days is a long wait 😩

I’m curious if any of you have had experience with this kind of lump. You can see flaked off bits around it in his fur.

Is the black bit a scab?

Could you send a photo to the vet in the meantime, to ease your mind until your appointment?

My vet says that he’s not worried about lumps on top of the skin. They’re most likely warts. Usually hard and look like a teeny-tiny cauliflower.

I thought it was a scab, especially with the tiny flakes flaking off when I was playing with it, but it’s attached to the skin coloured bit pretty good… reminds me of a mole or wart but the black is really throwing me off and the fact it’s grown is truthfully scaring me.

I’m relieved to hear about your vets thoughts though, I kinda thought of that as Axel’s cancerous lump was under the skin but I’m still quite worried. I’ll have to call them in the morning and ask if I can send a photo in in the meantime.

Lilly has similar on her head, top flakes off now and again.
I think (if it's anything like humans) that the darker bit is sebum producing skin, so greasy-looking, and can kind of peel off.
He's young for that type of thing though, so if I knew my vet's email, I would be sending it in. It's a good photo.

It’s important that you trust the vet’s abilities. Do you think this vet is competent? Otherwise, go with your instinct.
I just feel she’s not very patient with boisterous pups. But I last saw her almost a year and a half ago so maybe she’s better. I’m keeping my appt for Monday with his regular vet just incase though. I just can’t wait until, I’m too worried.

I think this is the right call, and gives you back up so if for any reason you want to call today’s consultation short (if the vet’s still not giving you and Hugo what you need, etc) then you have Monday with your preferred vet as a not-far-away fallback. I hope it goes well and gives you a clear answer x

Back from the vet. While the vet was examining the lump and feeling around, the black part actually came off and it started to bleed. As she was cleaning it up, after a couple swipes with gauze I noticed something unusual near the wound. She took a closer look, picked it out, and asked, “Do you have a cat…?”

Turns out, it looked like part of a cat’s claw had gotten stuck in him and caused a foreign body reaction! Funny enough, I did remember hearing Hugo squeak that morning while I was in the shower, so clearly Gizmo must’ve told him off 🤦🏼‍♀️—but I didn’t put two and two together at the time.

Anyways, now I just need to apply Polysporin for a few days and watch for any signs of the lump coming back. The vet’s pretty confident that was the cause though!
