What made you smile today?

I had the most wonderful surprise today, and I’m still smiling!

From 2003-2008 we belonged to an organization called Children of Chernobyl. It was an organization that sponsored children from Belarus, who were directly up-wind of the Chernobyl explosion and who lived with low-level radiation every day because of it. Doctors had discovered that if kids could get out of the country even once for about three months or more when they were children, they had a greatly reduced chance of getting cancer later in life. At any rate a chapter had started here in our town and in 2003 we joined. In 2004 our boy came over to stay the summer, 9 years old. He stayed from the beginning of July to mid-September. He was right invetween our two boys’ age so he fit in just great. We ended up having him come 3 summers, over 5 years, but then the program was disbanded. We have been in touch minimally over social media, but today out of the blue, he phoned! I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to hear his voice...it was like getting in touch with one of your kids that you haven’t seen or talked to for 10 years.

We did try to call him a couple times after the last time we saw him but it was very difficult, as no one in his immediate family spoke English, and he wasn’t that great at it either, although we did see great improvement over the years we hosted him. So as time went on it just became too difficult to try to call. And like I said, I saw him on Instagram and FB, but very minimally. Enough to know he had finished University at any rate.
I guess he had been talking to his mum and she told him he should call, bless her. At any rate, it was like getting the best surprise ever to realize it was him calling.
His English was actually not bad, we were able to have a conversation, at any rate. It was just so wonderful.

I’ll be smiling for a long time over that!!

We too have people locally who run ‘Friends of Chenobyl Children’ and they host children every year from Belarus. We have become involved with them and are helping to raise funds. I have not hosted a child but photos are put on our villages fb page and I love to see all the wonderful things they do whilst they stay here and how they go home looking happy and more healthy. They see the dentist here and optician and they get their hair done, given clothes and eat really healthy food. They go to the sea side and eat ice cream and have a truly wonderful time. A lot of things get taken to Belarus to help the families. Your story @Lisa is wonderful - you have made a real lasting difference for that child now adult ❤

That is so lovely @Lisa , how kind of you to do this and how great you must feel that this young man has remembered you and wanted to contact you again. He must really have enjoyed and appreciated his visits. Maybe he will visit you again now he is older.
Yes I really hope so, too! He did mention that he’d love to come back, so fingers crossed. We are going to call him again today, as my OH also wants to chat with him. :)

We were clay pigeon shooting this afternoon, and a chap (who also shoots) was up on the bank mending one of the traps. He came down for a break & he & his wife and his wee Springer, Fern, watched us shoot. Fern sat very nicely bit was all a quiver. Her mum said "she wants to chase the clays". She watched every one. She waited until I'd finished then her dad sent her out to the middle of the range where she waited and waited. I had to point my gun & shout BANG and she spun around to see a rabbit clay fly out, chased it & fetched it back to dad. And that was it, Fern was one happy Spaniel then. She came in with us for tea & biscuits and a cuddle with dad. She's such a sweetie.

Made me smile . For the last two and a half years I have been feeding Nelly on a mix of her very expensive toy dog fish kibble, with cooked veg and often some raw meat or sardines . She hasnt ever been an enthusiastic eater until yesterday and today when I inadvertently ran out of her kibble and so gave her some of Reubens Skinners duck and rice . Little monkey has scoffed it with great gusto even though the pieces are ( for her ) quite large , in fact she has been begging for more , well well well

I came back from a stroll with my camera and heard J playing his sax inside the house. Plus, another noise. Is that ... a dog.... howling?!?!

Turns out that Shadow has started to sing along every time J plays his sax! He tried to get it on video but the boy is technologically challenged. Next time, I'll show him how to use my GoPro, that's pretty foolproof! :D

@Natalie Monty reminds me so much of my dear Rolo (who was also a choccie). In some ways it was quite handy as I remember visiting relations and needing to keep him out of part of the large living room and being able simply to put a stool in the middle, which he could easily have walked around, but wouldn't. He was also intimidated by the neighbours' cats who would sit on the garden path and not let him past. (Molly would either push past or shout to us to move the obstacle - and happily cats don't often risk our garden now.)
