it was just a wonderful day. We (my son, DiL and little grandson) stayed in Windsor overnight on Monday and then my son and I walked to the castle in the morning. I’d been quite worried about going, but although it was a formal occasion it was also very relaxed. There were so many people on duty at the castle, but all very welcoming. The Prince of Wales took the investiture and each recipient with their guest stayed together and as we went through the state rooms until we reached the room where our group was to wait. Eventually, after a briefing in that room, we progressed on through to where the ceremony took place. Each person went in turn for their investiture and their guest stood with one of the officials at one side near the orchestra for a perfect view - a really special moment.
There were over 90 investitures that morning, but it didn’t seem at all rushed, although I’m sure it went to a strict timetable! One of the highlights for me was a string quartet playing Massenet’s ‘Meditation’ as we walked past. I’d asked a friend who was a professional violinist to play that some years ago on my grandfather’s old violin for my parents’ golden wedding.
My DiL and Rory had an unexpected bonus too. They couldn’t come into the castle, but saw the band and horses going from the barracks for the changing of the guard - much more exciting for a 3-today year old!
