Which kibble

I know we've been through this time and time again but I really think I need to try something else for Molly. Despite summer edning, she's scratching big time.

We're pretty sure her allergies are environmental but, in an attempt to be absolutely sure, I'm going to try again to get the best/right grub for her. So, a kibble with single protein and single carbo sounds as if it's a good start.

I've spent the past 2 days reading everything I can find and, as always, there is a whole load of contradictory stuff, including from vets. I'd love to ask - I know, yet again - what everyone finds the best for itchy/scratchy/anal-blocked dogs. I really don't want to put her back on steroids again because that will mean she's been on them for just about a year without much break. She's only 4.5, I fear that constant steroids is not safe.

Stanley is on Canagan.

He’s on salmon and sweet potato flavour. It’s quite expensive - about £40 for a 6kg bag but he only gets through one a month so not too bad really.

We really like it for him.

@FayRose I'm going through a similar, but slightly different thing with Bear right now. You might like to try Tails.com where you can limit kibble and treats to single protein or carb sources. You could try game or white fish as a starter

I switched Cassie onto Burns when she was 15/16 months old, she has either chicken and rice or fish and rice.

My reasons for sourcing a new food were different to yours however. For her it was about behaviour and needed a food with no additives, or minimal anyway. She has never had itchy problems , but she was at that time beginning to have anal glands issues.
Since switching to this she has no problem with anal glands.

She maintains a good healthy weight, but seems to me to eat loads! The vets are always very pleased with her health anyway.
They do a range of food, it might be worth looking on their website or having a chat with them.

I'm in Canada, so food options are different but I think Molly has similar ongoing issues as Quinn. I chose lamb as the single protein, as it was considered novel given that she had never had lamb in her previous kibbles, so he vet recommended that and oatmeal. I tried a couple options before finding a lamb/oatmeal that worked for her and I find it has helped her overall issues of itch, tummy and glands. She's been on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Lamb and Oatmeal for just over a year, and she loves it and it checks all the boxes. For treats, I stick to lamb or ones with no protein at all (like berry or cheese flavours). I give her fish oil to help with the itch, as well as bathe her after a particularly grassy walk or when she's extremely itchy. From May-October she's on apoquel. This is the first year she's been under control with a pill every other day, or every 3 days, with no gland issues, so I do think the food has helped.

I use Millie's wolfheart for Rory his stomach very sensitive and he does really well on it. Iver had Simpsons which was good and Eden, but he's now on Millie's too. I also used Arden Grange for Doug which was good

Burns has quite a range of single protein kibble, with an added sensitive range. Homer is on Pork and potatoe or fish and rice, he was on lamb and rice. Chicken is no good for him, he set very soft runny poop on chicken.
Homer is being weirdly very fussy at the moment, only eating half his food then wanting his dentastix, then later going back to finish his food then demanding more dentastix. Or only eating if his food has extra added treats. Or making a fuss when what he hast eaten has been taken away.

I’ve had our dogs on proplan. But I’m in the Netherlands so don’t know if it’s sold where you live. Two (or three) years ago I changed it in Acana. Finn was itching a lot and thought to change the food into grain free and without chicken. He had it for a year until I noticed he was slow during walks, panting and exhausted. The vet couldn’t find a thing and was puzzled. At the same time there were rumors about Acana causing cardiomyopathy, so I changed it back again in proplan with salmon. Itch comes back so now and then, but manageable

We have a local kibble supplier who delivers. I checked the ingredients and it's all good stuff. Joy looks realy well on it and clearly enjoys it, and when I look after Tess, the flatulence and diarrhoea that her Dad thinks are just part of her are gone within a couple of days, so I think it seems OK.

I've seen Cassie and I know she does look very well and her coat is superb, so, at the moment I'm very much thinking Burns. If they have a single protein option that isn't chicken, I'll try that.

Annie is on Millie's wolfheart Riverside mix which is duck and trout. Annie can't have chicken. Fred is on Royal Canin Maxi

I used to give Ripple a combination of Millie’s Wolfheart and raw in an effort to sort out his behavioural issues, I’d swapped through several different foods but I’m not really sure anything made any difference. I’ve now ended up with both boys on Skinners duck and rice as I couldn’t find a decent raw supplier here and I also found it suited Toffee who had anal gland issues when he was younger.

Rourke is on Arden Grange Lamb and Rice, it suits him well, I have tried the Chicken and Rice but not good for him.
