Sleep. Or lack thereof.

So we are now at a agreement it appears.

He goes to bed like an angel at 10pm... walks and gets into his crate and waits for his bedtime snack (I don’t even give my kids a bedtime snack ?) and then he wakes up at 6.29am on the dot. I don’t know how he manages it at exactly the same time every morning but he does. No kids here as they are away with their dad so it is literally just his wake up time.

This morning was 5.10 but he slept from 5pm onwards last night after the beach so to be fair to him he was more than wide awake at 5... for clarity, I was not wide awake.

Leo who has never woken up before 10am in memorable history now also wakes up at 6.29. Traitorous b******.

In 4 days I’m going to Greece and he’s going to the breeders for 2 weeks. For 2 weeks I’m going to be able to sleep past 6.29. It will be glorious.

He is 5 months old today. All the books.... they lie. He still bites me (not as hard as it was for the most part) he still takes my socks off my feet (not gently!) and he still wakes up stupidly early.

This is why labrador puppies are cute. It’s a survival thing.

Sigh. 5.30 again.

We did go to bed early last night (10) so I would have expected him up early.

Maybe I need to feed him more? He’s not underweight but he’s on the slimmer side.

Or maybe he’s just a morning dog who ended up with an oh so not morning owner ?

I’ve just read a website that says that a dog under 8 months should only be asked to hold themselves for 1 hour per month of age plus 1 overnight.. Mas is now 5 months (yesterday) so he should be sleeping 6 hours.. last night he did 7.5hr so maybe he’s actually on cue?

That's going to depend on the dog. Xena was doing 10 hours overnight at 5 months, but Fiona's Luna was still getting up in the early hours until...15 months? You know he can sleep longer so I wouldn't worry. Plus it's light in the morning which must be confusing to a pup.

I wouldn't put too much faith in websites and how long a pup can go without peeing. It really does depend upon the pup - they're all different. 5:30 is early but he had gone 7.5hrs which is a pretty decent amount of time. With Juno last pee used to be around 11 and we would be up around 7 to 7:30 so not a significant difference.

During the week, unless I'm WFH, we get up at around 5.30 and have to encourage HRH (his royal hairiness) to get out of bed. On weekends he starts crying at around 6.30 so we either start the day then or one of us gets up and let's him out for a wee then put him back in his pen with a kong. That buys us maybe another 20 mins but that's it.

As much as I will miss him when we go on holidays in 3 weeks and 4 days (who's counting!), It will be so nice to (a) sleep in and (b) hear a crunch and realise it is a coconut falling and not the tv remote or your reading glasses getting chewed

Lilly started waking about 5.30am when she was 6-9 months oldish after sleeping longer during the night before that.
Once we worked out it was just to be with us, we stopped the whole ignoring her business, letting her howl etc and just let her out for a pee then let her in our bedroom.
It was a satisfactory solution for us.
