Thanks Kate, I contacted CSJ last year about this but Hattie can't have it due to the ingredients as she has kidney issues. xx

How about something like this? (Tick Away)
I have rose geranium essential oil that I use for Oreo to repel ticks - just a couple drops on her neck and a couple drops at the top of her tail twice a week. I think it does a good job, she has only ever had a handful of ticks, and it can get quite rife with ticks in certain areas around here! X

I'm just going to add a voice of caution. I know you don't want to use conventional tick treatments because of the reaction Hattie had, but you must be aware that just because something is touted as "natural" it doesn't mean it's safe and doesn't mean there's no risk of similar reactions. In fact, it will almost definitely mean that there has been less research done on potential side effects.
I'm not saying you should use conventional medications, but please don't think that "natural" means benign and safe because that's just not true.

Oh I know, I am fully aware. There are lots of "natural" products that come with warnings. I really am just stuck as to what to do for Hattie. xx

Crossed posts, but I already typed this all out, so I'm going to push enter anyway ;)

...

There are some words of caution about the use of geranium oil, I've found with a brief search. Geraniums are toxic to dogs if ingested, but it appears that they can also suffer effects (vomiting, lethargy, rash) from just rolling in them. Not all dogs or people, but enough that it's reported.

Look up "essential oils safe for dogs" and "essential oils toxic to dogs" and you'll find some oils appear on both lists, such as lavender. The reason is because there's little control around these products, and little research. It may be that something is safe on a collar, but if they lick it off, it can make them ill. The dosage may be a factor: how much they can tolerate in one go, and whether there's a build-up over time. But there's no regulation, so no guidelines. No convenient pipette or schedule based on the weight of the dog. In the same way as eating grapes can have severe consequences for some dogs but appear to have no effect on others, it can be a lottery, so just because dogs A, B, C and D are fine, it doesn't mean that dog X will be.

Again, I'm certainly not pushing you towards conventional solutions, just trying to make the point that caution should be used when using other means. I feel for you because it's horrible being in a heavy tick area and not have a solution. And with Hattie's coat, I don't imagine it's a simple job even to say that you're going to give her a good check each day!
Have you discussed with your vet, to see if she has any suggestions?

Thanks for this @snowbunny It's a minefield. I have discussed it with my vet but all they do is push digestible tablets and the Seresto collar. Mention anything 'natural' and they don't comment maybe because they don't know.

We check her over every day, brush her at the back door on returning from walks. I see no way forward with this xx

I had a lovely reply from Dorwest @kateincornwall . They don't make anything specifically for tick and flea treatment/repellent but advised their Fenugreek & Garlic tablets. Licensed by the VMD, supposed to be good for all sorts of things to support the immune system etc. Even though this product is not specifically for ticks some of their customers report good results against ticks, as apparently parasites don't like garlic. Not sure, my mind is boggled now, doesn't take much!! xx

Here's the link if anyone is interested. xx

I am confessing to being a very bad dog owner. I've been meaning to get Homer some more Advantix from the vet and somehow it always slipped my mind. I finally remembered today especially as Homer went through a lot of long grass on Saturday and will begging Mantrailing again tomorrow. As I got home with the packet there was a engourged fat yucky tick lying on the kitchen floor that must have recently dropped off Homer.

No need to confess @JES72 , life happens. The main concern is always tick-borne diseases, and hopefully that’s not an issue this time round. Our tick treatment is up to date but Kipper currently has an evil little sucker dug into the shaft below his penis 😬 he’s let me have a go at it a couple of times but has then said ‘that’s enough’ so I’m hoping it dies overnight…
