Joint Pain

Pleased to read @SteffiS that Ripple is well enough to mind not having a walk. Good that you have been able to talk with a vet and Ripple will be seen on Monday.

Surely there must be some sort of regulatory authority for vets and an obligation to provide out of hours cover, don't they have a code of practice or a duty of care?

It’s good to hear that Ripple has improved and even wanted a walk this morning. I hope your vet finds the reason for the sudden limp.

Fortunately the local practice which I use is now an employee-owned trust. There are now six surgeries and out-of-hours treatment is provided in two towns, one in the west and one in the east of the area covered, so it’s not too far to go for those who normally attend the other practices. It’s worrying to see that this isn’t the norm any more. I was so grateful when Wispa was so ill when we were in Scotland about nine years ago. I took her to the local practice, where she was put on a drip, but the vet suggested that I took her home for the night and returned in the morning, as they didn’t have overnight hospital accomodation. When she then said I would have to take Wispa into Glasgow or to Saltcoats if she worsened during the night I couldn’t cope - I had no idea where Saltcoats was and dreaded the thought of driving in the dark to Glasgow which I didn’t know either. i would have had to wake my three grandchildren and take them too so that my OH could have come to navigate and keep an eye on Wispa during the journey. The lovely vet took pity on me, phoned her boss, then stayed the night at the practice to look after Wispa there. What a lovely, kind vet.

I thought there was, but obviously not! I did phone RCVS some time back to complain but no-one was there due to Covid! I find it totally unbelievable that the veterinary world has deteriorated so seriously.

I'm so pleased to hear Ripple has made improvements and that you have an appointment booked in.

The emergency vet situation sounds very worrying. Non of our local vets operate after hours but we have two emergency vets within a 10 minute drive (in opposite directions) that are open 24/7. On the couple of occasions thay I've had to take Ella, we've had no trouble accessing care. I can't begin to imagine the fear of having a 3hr drive in the middle of the night x

Yes, my local practice became one about 10 years ago, operating two surgeries about 8 miles apart. Still very much a rural agricultural clientele, farms as well as small animals and first opinion for horses. I don't know what the out of hours provision they have.
At the moment they seem to have a stable work force, certainly the receptionists have been there forever.

I hope Ripple is feeling better today. What a scary situation for you and I'm appalled at the lack of emergency vet care. I really don't get it - emergency vet care costs an arm and a leg so you'd think these big corporations that are buying up practices would be all in for weekend/night care to boost their profits. In the US, it's like what @Emily described, lots of emergency vets in urban areas. But in Germany, it's similar to the UK - Regensburg has 250k inhabitants but zero emergency vets. I worry about that too. 🙁

We've just come back from the vet - Ripple behaved like an absolute idiot in the surgery and made me feel like a liar  . The (senior) vet couldn't find anything wrong with him, he manipulated his legs and Ripple was completely fine. He said they could do some x-rays but he felt it wasn't really necessary at the moment (Ripple was prancing like a pony at this point  ) .

I've just got to keep an eye on him and, all being well, they'll check again in a couple of months time when he has his jabs.

Oh Ripple! I'm chuckling at the thought of him prancing around.

But what an ordeal you've been through, with no answers. I hope he didn't over exert himself and end up feeling sore later x

Oh @SteffiS - also laughing at the prancing like a pony! But isn't this typical?
Firstly of course it's great that Ripple's feeling better and hurrah for that; secondly, clearly there was something and you did absolutely the right things to try and sort it out. Hopefully there'll be no reccurence and it's one more thing (Like my mum's dog Zorro last week) that can be chalked down to 'no idea what happened, but glad we're okay now'.
