Librela - a new option for pain relief for dogs with osteo arthritis

I think we are going to delay Hunter's next injection. His skin has become very red on his tummy/groin/legs and he now has scabs on the insides of his legs. This always kicks in at the start of the injection. He has not had allergies before so we are going to go for painkiller approach to see if the librela is the trigger. It could be grass related but we have to work out the trigger. It could be both. Off to the vets as we have mentioned it before, but he now gets a bigger dose and is uncomfortable. I remember @Emily talking about itchy Ella. So we have to work out our path forward.

Rory gets that around now every year. It's the grass pollen for him. He gets sore chops belly and under his arm pits. He's gets a few spots. I started him on apoquel mid may with a few medicated baths and he's ok. I'm reducing his dose at the moment. He's on half a tab once a day and will be for a bit longer. He had it before and it was before we started librela so we don't think it's that for him

Hi all, We’ve just started our dog Thunder on librela with his first dose being today. It’s great to see all of the dogs that have benefited from this injection and hoping thunder responds well to this too, he started struggling this year with his back legs and we can no longer take him for long walks. Will keep you updated on his progress.

Hi and welcome to our forum @Adamlfc23 and yes please keep us updated on lovely Thunder's progress. We have quite a few members with experience on Librela so I'm sure you will receive some useful and supportive advice. Most are in the Northern Hemisphere so will be online in a few hours

We do love pictures of our fur-children so please don't hesitate to use the Attach Files button below if you would like to share some :)

Resurrecting this thread because GGJ had developed, not exactly a limp, but more of a dipping movement on her right front leg, mainly on her way home from walks. The vet diagnosed arthritis, which is what I had suspected, and prescribed Rimadyl. We've had a careful couple of weeks, with several short on-lead walks a day to start with, and have gradually built back up to more normal walks.
I don't know how long she can have Rimadyl for, and have been considering trying an alternative, particularly Turmeric, having had several good reports on this from other dog owners. Does anyone here have any experience of this, or advice?
Any thoughts would be welcome.

Turmeric paste is excellent. You can make it yourself. 1/2 cup turmeric powder brought to a simmer in 2 cups water. Stir for 7-8 minutes, don’t let it burn. Gets quite thick. Let cool. Add 3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper. 1/3 cup oil (coconut or olive oil). Store in small portions in the freezer as it goes off quickly. Some people freeze in tiny ice cubes. Depends on how you want to give. I mix it into a big mush of veg and other “supplements”—ground pumpkin seeds, ground flaxseeds, kelp, apple cider vinegar. Snowie loves it. But it does make him smell of cats wee!! Very odd side effect.

Regarding her limp, check her paws. Might be a cut between her pads or a thorn. Snowie does that dipping limp when his paw is sore (unfortunately very often atm cos his skin is raw between the pads from allergies and licking). You can try a baby’s bootie to protect the paw and see if it helps.

I make the golden paste and youmove is also a good supplement. Golden paste mixed with salmon oil an bllack pepper helps it absorb properly. I also sprinkle green mussel powder on the golden paste. Blueberries are also a good natural inflammatory.
I honestly would use Liberia as the last choice if pain killers and supplements did not work . For me I have had a dog since 5 months old with joint issues He is now permanently on pain meds and we know Hunter won't become an old senior dog. Librela was not for Hunter as it gave him skin problems and stopped working. I would first try supplements like golden paste and youmove before moving on to the big boy painkillers. However a swollen joint sometimes needs NSAIDs. Just like us hoomans who need painkillers. I hope GGJ feels better x

I'm reading up on this thread as Homer will be starting Librela injections on Tuesday. How soon would Librela start to work? He's quite suddenly got quite a bit weaker and has pain in his joints, hips and shoulders. I'll look into tumeric paste. Vet feels that remedies would be high in fats and oils which with his megaoesophagus may be harder to digest.

I was having good results with Rory within a few days. I didn't believe it would help so quickly but by the end of 6 days he ways playing and much happier. Rory has spondylitis in the lower back he was in a lot of pain but the librella has really changed his life. I've never really found things like tumeric paste to be that great for Rory. Like a lot of things it just upset his tummy.
Thing is with librella is it works well or not brilliantly and you won't know until you try it. Hopefully it will help Homer feel more comfortable.

With Kipper, we noticed improvements within a week of starting Librela and so far (after ~12 months) it’s continued showing positive effects. Our vet is keeping an eye on the developing evidence base because there’s currently not a huge amount on side effects, shelving effects and fading over time. He’s also on Antinol which is green lipped mussel, glycerine and vit E.
