Librela - a new option for pain relief for dogs with osteo arthritis

I'm so nervous... Poppy's limp on her front leg has got a lot worse again. She is already on Rimadyl and YouMove Max. Our vet is strongly suggesting with try Librela. It's doing wonders for my mother's 12-year old collie... I wish I'd never looked at the FaceBook Librela page.

I'm sorry Poppy's limp has got worse again, it's so hard to see them like that isn't it. I can't remember your concerns about Librela based on the Facebook page - are there specific issues you're concerned about, or more generally about starting a new drug? This is not to dismiss your worries, but just to find out more.

I am specifically worried about Poppy's susceptibility to seizures. She has not had a seizure for 8 months, but she reacts very badly to any kind of tick or flea preventatives. My vet has no concerns with regard to the Librela and she knows Poppy very well. My OH is keen for us to try it. I'm just scared she'll react badly...

Golly that's understandable. While your vet is reassuring, they don't have your particular perspective. I'll ask our vet (who takes a lot of interest in Librela and side effects) if she knows of evidence either way on interactions with seizures. She's linked in with colleagues at the Bristol Veterinary School with similar interests so might have some insights.

Oh thank you that would be wonderful!!!

@MellowYellow the FB site is quite chilling to read. I tried Hunter when it first came out and it was sold as " no side effects". This concerned me as no drug has no side effects. It stopped working for us after the 5th use and we also had to increase the strength due to new guidelines. Coincidence or not Hunter got a very serious rash/skin issue after that injection and weed in the house. So for now I am on hold.
Hunter is also limping very badly at the moment, so I am still waiting for my infra red gun to arrive. OH ordered it and it seems to be lost in the tax/post pile ....thank you Brexit. Really pleased that @HAH is checking for you. There are also many good things about Librela too! @SwampDonkey is one of the MLF happy Librela users! My vet has seen no issues with Librela but it is a tiny practice and she did report Hunter's skin condition. No feedback yet about the report......The report was 2 years ago.
I no longer read the FB site but there was a really good informative post from an Australian vet about a year ago on it. I will see if I can find it.
Cuddles for Poppy.

I left the same FB site. I did not find it helpful at all, Not my kind of site at all. They seemed happier complaining and moaning and blaming when it didn't work as they hoped. I know a lot of us whose dogs were fine left because we didn't dare say they were fine. A lot of the other sites and groups I'm part of are more rational and balanced. I know from my own experience sometimes the risk is worth it. It doesn't work for every dog it can have side effects what drug doesn't? I've never really had much patience with worrying about side effects before trying a drug. I tried it because I want the best for my friend and owed him a try. It's been great for him he's happy. If it was making him worse I would stop it. I did notice that a lot of dogs that did badly had other health issues too and were a lot older. Most dogs I am aware of have done well on it. You either give it ago and if it doesn't work or makes them worse you stop. I prefer to go on experience and do far it's been ok for him. Me and the boys live for today. Also There were not many options for Rory

That FB site is shocking. Was it here that someone said there positive results post had been deleted?
I am on the fence too, and a bit scared. I am seeing my vet Monday about gabapentin as lilly is increasingly struggling.
I don't want gaba, but want librela less.
I feel your pain Karen
Rourke is on both Librela and Gabapentin. I held off Gabapentin for ages until my vet friend said his daughter's dog had been on it for three years with no side effects, so I put Rourke on it. He has been on Librela about two years and gabapentin for about nine months. He is beginning to get a weaker back end, but he is 12 and has had arthritis in his hock joint since he was seven years. I am prepared to give them a try rather than Rourke being in pain.

So I had a long discussion with OH last night. We have agreed that while we are both happy to try Librela when the time is right, that we don't think Poppy is quite there yet. Last summer she was limping much worse than she is now, and we put her on double Rimadyl and very restricted exercise for about a month, after which her limp almost completely disappeared! We have agreed we will try that again for the next month, and then re-assess. For me, Librela is more of a 'big gun', that you bring in when your dog is really in pain and having trouble moving. Then the risks are definitely worth it. Right now, particularly with Poppy's seizure tendencies, I'm going to hold off.

Thank you very much everyone for the balanced viewpoints! You have helped me clarify my thinking.

Hi everyone. I'm so happy to be part of this group.

My papillon Ginger just had her second Librela shot today and I am waiting to see how much it will help her. She's 16 and has a minor heart murmur but is otherwse pretty healthy except for the lack of mobility and pain from the arthritis, wh8ch started just a few months ago. Also, she has lost about 90% of her vision but is still very feisty.

After the first Librela injection, Ginger improved quite a bit and showed no side effects. She seemed to have very little pain and her mobility improved maybe about 25%. Ginger's vet said a lot of her patients' dogs improved even more after the second injection.

I'll try to get a photo of Ginger uploaded.
