Wispa's not well

For the past three weeks Wispa hasn't been herself at all. Initially I took her to the vet because I thought her anal glands were bothering her, as she was straining to poo and scooting, something that she's never really done before. Her usual vet was fully booked, so we saw one I didn't know at all. He was very good with her (she barked until we went into the consulting room, so he talked to her but didn't make eye contact, as he realised she's not keen on that with people/dogs she doesn't know). He emptied her anal glands, muttered something about maybe a bit of thickening on one side, but wasn't very communicative apart from that.

She enjoyed her countryside walk the following weekend, but continued straining to poo - and I noticed occasional spots of blood on the tiled floor. So I made another appointment - again, our usual vet wasn't available but his partner was, so we saw her. She said Wispa's anal glands were still clear, but suggested blood tests and poo samples, all of which have been ok apart from maybe a slight indication on one blood test that she may have pancreatitis.

Yesterday morning Wispa wouldn't eat her usual food at all, even hand-feeding, although she ate a banana and some toast crusts, so it wasn't because she couldn't eat. In the afternoon I went into the surgery and eventually managed to speak to our vet's partner again, as I wanted to find some low-fat food to tempt Wispa to eat. She sorted out some food and then suggested booking Wispa in for a scan next Tuesday morning, as the results haven't really determined what's wrong.

So we wait now for next Tuesday! Wispa's enjoying the food - low fat tinned ID and kibble, so that's a relief, but she's drinking more and needing to wee more than usual, with a few accidents too. She's also a bit slow in settling comfortably and panting from time to time, so she's not really happy. I hope the change in food will help, but who knows. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m sorry Wispa hasn’t been feeling well  When ever they turn their nose up to their food but eat other food happily I can’t help but wonder if it’s a bad batch of kibble. But with the other described symptoms that doesn’t really make sense. But at least she is eating and hydrated and hopefully improves soon. The accidents make me wonder if maybe a UTI, but if she is drinking more, plus having canned food which holds a lot of moisture, that could explain the accidents. Sending feel better vibes:hug:

When dogs have pancreatitis they tend to stretch as though in a play bow. If it is that, low fat foods are excellent and the treatment. Could she possibly have a blockage which is stuck near her anus the lower part of the bowel? Long time to wait until Tuesday but I know if you are worried there are vets on call.

I wondered about that too, but from the photos I’ve taken the vet thinks that’s unlikely because the poo isn’t flat and ribbon-like but rounded, although tends to be stringy. Wispa’s poo has always been narrower than Tuppy’s but it’s even more so now. At least it means I can tell the difference if they manage to escape close inspection!

Yes, It seems a possibility doesn’t it. She had a week’s course of antibiotics a couple of weeks ago, but that was to target possible gut infection so I’m not sure that it would target a UTI too.

Thank you all for your concern - she’s been doing so well until now.

@Granca so sorry dear Wispa is out of sorts. I don't have any advice to add but maybe a Lambie is called for? :cancan:

It's weird because I was only thinking about Wispa and Tuppy yesterday, hoping all's ok as we haven't seen much of them lately xx

@Granca I’m so sorry poor Wispa isn’t well. It’s such a worry when you don’t know what the problem is. Increased urinating and increased drinking are both signs of a UTI. Scott and Scout used to drink loads when they had UTIs. It’s there way of trying to cure themselves. A weeks course of antibiotics for her gut would not necessarily clear up a UTI. Sometimes it can be two weeks, sometimes longer depending on what is causing the infection and sometimes it has to be a particular antibiotic. If your vet didn’t do a urine test it might be worth nipping a urine sample in to the vets for a dip stick test if you think it might be a UTI they don’t need to see Wispa and it would at least rule it in or out before Tuesday.
