UK ticks - spring’s here!

We took Kipper for a great after-work roar through some nearby woodland today, a very deer-heavy area. I picked a tick off his muzzle en route. Within 30 mins of getting home I’ve found another 3 ticks on him (all round the face area - I know they’re drawn by carbon dioxide, guess this is evidence of that?). I think it’s going to be a heavy tick year round here...

Oh, I didn't realise there was a link, how does that work?
Unusually we saw a huge roe deer yesterday which ran right in front of us in a nearby park. But we are in a low risk tick area, never found one on Monty except when we were in Scotland.

I Going to Scotland soon so I'm ordering some tick stuff now. I hate ticks and I've looked at the tick maps and am worried. I always carry a tick hook with me . Ticks like big herbivores sheep and deer country is always bad.

This is the best link I can find: Tips and tricks to stay safe from ticks - Public health matters - they don’t have eyes, but they locate mainly through vibrations, heat and carbon dioxide so often are attracted to areas at head height to host animals and car exhaust height.

I found a tick today on Toffee’s head, so I’ve had to start him on the Simparica that I use for Ripple. It’s the first time he’s had it and it always worries me when I have to give the boys anything like that, but I think it’s necessary as we always get a problem with ticks once it starts to get warmer.

Joy has Simparica. We had problems with Solstice and deer ticks, so are careful.Little Joy seems fine with Simparica.

Fred and Annie wear Seresto tick collars from March until October. I use to just use a tick remover but Fred just got too many. They never get them now.

We use Bravecto, it seems to do the job (in that they generally don’t embed themselves). I think vets recommended different treatments depending on local conditions, is that right?

Yup. I used Bravecto our first year in Spain and it worked really well at killing all that attached, but because there are so many ticks here, it was pretty grim as the dogs would still bring in ticks on their coats that hadn’t yet attached, and we would find them crawling on the bed covers. Shudder.
Advantix has been brilliant at repelling, with only the very occasional one attached. I’m not a fan of the collars, but trying to see if they’re better for the sandflies - Advantix didn’t seem to do a lot to repel those, and they are a worry.

All Guide Dogs and pups are on Nexgard, so I get the same for Tatze just to make things easier.

I didn’t use anything for my Cavaliers and they frequently got ticks - eeeew, ticks are horrible little beasts. :tmi:

Took one off Shadow this morning while I was doing nail trimming. Just sat there, on the outside of his coat, not attached.

Either this is a really heavy year for ticks, or the Seresto is nowhere near as effective as Advantix :|

Hm, that’s a bit of a concern. I think it might be quite a tick-y year ahead

Seresto worked well for ticks and fleas in the south of Spain, but maybe they are becoming immune to it. :(

So this means I should stick Carbon's Seresto on now? Goofy me, I was thinking since the UK doesn't have other nasties like Leish and heartworm that I could wait to put on his new Seresto until we left for France.

I think it depends where you are walking, Emily, and how common the ticks are there. My family's dogs don't wear them, or have spot-on because there aren't a huge number where they walk their dogs.
If you're walking in lots of woodland where there are deer, or near grazing sheep etc, it's probably not a bad idea.
