Emily and Carbon

What's the German word for cider? Is it something like apfelbier? *yes I could google but where's the fun in that* :D
Technically it's "Apfelwein" but I had to look it up because everyone here just says "cider". It's kind of one of those in fashion Denglish words of late, especially with the heat. You can actually get Bulmers in three flavours plus a couple more obscure yet trendy UK brands if you go to the big supermarket out of town. My Irish stash (called 'Bulmers' in Ireland and 'Magners' in the UK) is all gone now sadly. The Irish pub sells UK Bulmers, much to the consternation of the Irish bartender. Also some additional TMI on cider, it completely amuses said Irish bartender that manly German men regularly order berry Bulmers, something no proper Irishman would do. My theory is that once you are in skin tight leather trousers embroidered with tiny white edelweiss flowers, your manhood is pretty secure (in more ways than one) and drinking a pink fizzy drink is no longer an issue.

Anyway, that's the alcohol discussion for the day. It's going to be (again) blazing hot today, but both Carbon and I are suffering from extreme cooped-in-itis from long boring study days, so I'm thinking of dragging him to either a small touristy town or a farm animal sanctuary where he can meet llamas and donkeys.

Let's see what happens!

People round here love the stuff... We have friends who brew this poison from apples from their own orchards, and there are championships to decide the best Apfelwein for the year... We were recently invited to an Apfelwein tasting, but sadly I was otherwise engaged. OH however is much more intrepid than I, and went along. He said there were rows of bottles of the stuff, with people tasting it just like at a wine tasting... "Oh yes, you can really taste the Braeburns in this particular one..." :sneaky:

No Emily, Apfelwein is NOT like cider!!! It is a speciality of the area I live in, and is much stronger than cider, and not sweet at all. It is DISGUSTING I have no idea how people can drink it.
Hmm....yes, we bought some cider from Ampleforth Abbey when we visited, apparently it is renowned.
Took it home, chilled it, took one sip, it's RANK.
So I very much get you. Rather have the fake berry one hands down.

Oh, Southern Comfort. One time I decided to have one - ONE - and then this overly-flashy guy kept on buying rounds. I was too young and polite to say I would prefer something else, and he was an important somebody to the guy I was with at the time. Yeah, that stuff is grim!

My "incident" was when I was about 17 and I got very drunk on electric lemonades (Curaçao, vodka and who knows what else?) at a friend's birthday at Chiquito's. Classy.
I was staying with my friend overnight; her dad had stayed up to make sure we got back OK. I did my best to pretend I was sober (pretty sure I must have failed awfully at that one) and then spent the majority of the night puking up blue in the bathroom. That was the first time I ever got drunk. Sadly, not the last :D
