    Sheep and other livestock

The answer to this is yes and no. Can I walk my dogs through fields of sheep off lead to heel then yes. We are surrounded by sheep here and at our previous house and they have always been a background noise and the dogs have never shown any interest in them at all. There is a single strand of...

    Food for travelling

Hi reading @Alleeluna post about food reminded me to tell you about a new food that I found My dogs have sensitive stomachs and I very careful about what they have to eat. Normally we start the day with a small amount of Fish for Dogs kibble as one dog is on a fish only diet. They love this...

    Training Molly

No problem. I’m sure that you will sort it all out. It’s so good if you can video yourself sometimes as it shows you exactly what you are doing and if you watch several times things become so much clearer. Good luck

    Training Molly

If Molly is looking away from you then she is telling you that she feels uncomfortable. Can you check your position? Are you leaning into or over her when you are lining her up? Are your feet and hips and shoulders facing in the direction you want her to go? I see so many people in classes...

    Training Molly

Ok it’s difficult to see what he problem is without any photo or video, and I’m not a trainer of course but I can give you some ideas to try.

Still weeing in the house at four months

Pickle was a horror for weeing in the house. All my other dogs were quite reliably house trained by 14/16 weeks and although I did exactly the same as before, she was terrible. I just kept telling myself that she would grow out of it and not to stress too much. She was super quick at learning...

Training with a professional field trialler

I would make sure that I had an recall that was absolutely rock solid as that is such keystone of training. Pickle came having had a recall whistle blown before every meal and that made such an enormous difference. Both to how easy it was to get her back, and how positive an experience recall...

Training with a professional field trialler

This was all a bit jaw dropping for me as we must have skipped at least 6 months worth of lessons in an hour. I had no idea that she would run out on a blind retrieve, that I had any sort of stop whistle at a distance of 70 yards or that I could repeat again and again with her. I’ve been left...

Training with a professional field trialler

I have friend that had a super dog and she didn’t start Gundog training with her until she was 3 so I don’t think you should be too sure that you won’t get to your goal. There is a lot to having an older sensible dog to work with.

Training with a professional field trialler

Indeed directional blinds are tricky and something I would never have tried on my own with such a young dog. Pickle has only just had her first birthday! In fact, at first Pickle had a memory and because there was an electric pole in the rough grass she kept running to the pole and ignoring the...

Training with a professional field trialler

I don’t think I will go again unless I want to see if she had improved. It’s pretty intense and I like going to my classes and having a chat with my friends as much as the training.

Training with a professional field trialler

Like you I thought the same but was so surprised that it wasn’t obvious that Pickle was getting frustrated at all. Stopping her on the whistle when she went wrong, recalling her and setting her up again, she was quite happy to repeat. In fact by the third stop she was anticipating the recall and...

Training with a professional field trialler

I have wondered whether breaking the process down into small chunks is easy teaching that means that the class goes at the rate of the slowest person and their dog. I have been doing a few zoom classes and the best thing for me is being able to tailor the exercise to what I thought my dogs were...

Training with a professional field trialler

This trialler is someone who qualifies dogs for the IGL championship most years and so is very successful. I was most interested in what they had to say as it was so different from how I have taught my dogs. I’m trying to teach my dogs with very little error and have a rule that I try something...

Training with a professional field trialler

This week I had to message a trialler about a subject and surprisingly I was offered the chance to have a 121 session with them. I decided that it was too good an opportunity to miss and spent over an hour today with my one year old dog working through various exercises. I’m still reeling at...

Boredom busters for humans and dogs

I’m no expert at all but my suggestion would be to work on being calm around kibble as my trick! Is it the doing stuff with you that is so exciting or that fact that he’s getting kibble? If it’s the kibble I wouldn’t be having it on me and I would be using it less. ie asking for longer chains...

Boredom busters for humans and dogs

If you are on face book then I recommend joining this public group to teach your dogs easy tricks that can be done around the house. It’s free and the instructions are very well explained.

Boredom busters for humans and dogs

Snow bunny suggested that I found some exercises for gun dogs on another thread, but I thought we could all add our suggestions to this thread for general things to keep our dogs busy. I’ll start off with a screen shot of things to do to make your walk more interesting.

    To the quieter forum members

Hi everyone. I’m still here but have not posted recently. As the board has become increasingly a group of friends supporting one another rather than a dog training board I have felt uneasy about posting. You are all lovely but I am unhappy about saying too much about my personal life on the...

    Allelomimetic behaviour

It’s interesting because I have used it without really understanding why, only a gut feeling that it must work, but when I’ve told people they don’t seem to either believe or they dismiss it. I just didn’t know that it was a ‘thing’ as I’ve never heard it described before. In the post the...
