    chasing dogs..for a GOOD reason!

Our walk started a little rough today..seems like every dog on the block is in "bark mode" today But once we got going, it was good. Got coffee, worked on "walk nice" and "come back" (to my side) most of the way home, as I didn't feel like watching him choke himself in his attempts to happily...

    Fence- running

I have an idea..and I want to sound board It's one of my 3am insomnia concepts, so it's a work in progress. Here goes. Dogs fence-run because they both think they own the fence. So what if I own the fence in that part of the yard? What if I install a short fence from the end of Tiko's yard...

    Dog Park manners

I am not generally a fan of Dog parks...but I am in a position where the dog park is really the only place that I can let Shamas off-leash without worrying much about trouble. Even in my own yard, I have to worry about the neighbors letting their puppy out, and Shamas "going off" Shamas' issues...

    Brittle nails

Does anyone have any suggestions for brittle nails? Shamas has ANOTHER split nail, and we're off to the vet tommorrow to have it cut and filed back. Seems like it happens every 3-4 months. Anything I can feed him to help?

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

So we're on the hunt for a new vet(or more the point, a back-up vet) due to COVID As it stands, we are registered with two...Firth, whom we love, but they are running only 8-4, Mon-Thur on a curbside basis. I'm unhappy with this situation, because it means I can't actually TALK to my vet...

The neighbors got a puppy. Not sure how Shamas feels....

He's not fence-running, that's a good sign. The fact that the puppy isn't old enough to know that territorial behavior is an option helps here. But he IS stopping to sniff the air, and giving a WoROROROO! (It's his "there's someone at the door" bark)stiff-legged before running off to mark a...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

Shamas seems to be regressing less this year. He's definitely more jumpy with the onset of fall weather, and we had a lingering incident yesterday. But on the same page, last night he walked to the main road, and past a dog that was laying down next to the sidewalk. Granted, my youngest(fear...

Guard dog on duty- Good boy, Shamas!

Shamas asked to be let out back earlier today, and when hubby let him out, he left the house just as an intruder landed in our yard after hopping the 5 foot fence at the end. Shamas shot out of the door and made a good old racket, and the intruder was over that fence as fast as you can imagine...

    Big day for Shamas

Shamas Met Two dogs on his walks today, and though not perfect, he did well. The first was near home, and was a retreiver coming towards us. He got a little nervous, but as I was just standing there calmly waiting for the light to turn, he took his cue from me. He met the dog at the corner...

How do you whistle-train a dog?

IT had occurred to me that a whistle would cut through the haze when Shamas and Tiko fence-yell So I bought the Clix two-tone whistle, which was supposed to come with a booklet, to instruct you on how to train the dog with it. There was no such manual. The whistle definitely gets his...

Just when I was ready to pay for a trainer....

Shamas goes and pulls a 180 lol In the last couple of weeks he has: Ignored a dog barking at him from the other side of the street Initiated a meeting with a strange dog in a new place Not reacted to 5 dogs on this evening's walk Begun to accept the "wait" cue to as something loosely...

    Best Puppy food?

My daughter has been waiting for weeks, and it's nearly time. July 4/5th is the expected arrival date for the puppy Apollo, a Chesakepe bay/Bernese Mountain dog mix. I need to decide on a food for him. The breeder is unsure exactly what she's feeding him...she says Puppy chow blended with her...

    Muzzle/Noseband for Shamas?

I'm thinking that with the new puppy coming in about 6 weeks, now might be a good time to muzzle-train Shamas. I'm not concerned about potential aggression, but Shamas does get excited and mouthy...I'd like that safety measure in place so he doesn't nip the puppy. Matt is older, and "tells"...

How is social distancing Affecting your dog?

Personally, I'm seeing improvement in Shamas- he's becoming LESS reactive, as dogs move away from him, and he no longer feels the need to scare them off by acting out. His threshold is shortening, as he finds dogs less threatening. But I wonder about friendly dogs? How is this affecting them?

Help! I'm at my wits end

TIKO, the chihuaha next door, with whom there is a longstanding rivalry...has learned that if he barks from anywhere on his property, Shamas will bark back. this is not friendly, "hey, how ya doin?" barking...it's two dogs claiming territory through house walls. Standing on hind legs, barking at...

    Anxious without a collar

Shamas gets really anxious if I take off his collar, but it's not fitting properly anymore. The replacement is a martingale. I'd like to condition him to not wear a collar before the puppy gets here. I don't want a collar being a handle for the puppy to teeth on, which it would easily be as...

    Bringing in puppy

My adult daughter has decided to buy a puppy. It is a puppy from a kennel Club GSH breeder, and will be temperament tested to suit our household. Shamas has been described, including his fear of strange dogs, etc on walks. . She is spending a LOT of money ($2400) on this puppy, and I want to...

Taking those impromptu training sessions when they come

Shamas is bored stupid, with this self-isolation and lack of leash-work. I can't be where the air is cold, or I go into voilent coughing fits and it's snowing right now. So when I saw his nemesis poke her black and white nose under my son's door, I grabbed the treat bag and went for it! Of...

    Anal glands...

Does anyone have any suggestions to reduce Anal gland issues? Shamas tends to have to get them relieved every 6 weeks or so since going on the Hills diet. The vet doesn't want me to move him off that diet, but I'm finding he has very little "waste" when on this food. No please correct me if I'm...
