    Snood?!

I have something similar when I fly.

When looking at dog and owner car-travel safety, it's also worth looking at the NCAP ratings for different vehicles.

    Busytoys for alone time-suggestions?

@snowbunny It's mainly for convenience. I put 8dl of kibble in a bowl with hot water, let it soak and then fill 10 Kongs in one go. I also thought that the Kongs are not going to wear out any quicker by having more of them. "I'd need a bigger freezer with any more, though :D " A simple...

    Busytoys for alone time-suggestions?

We have this, allow me to comment: 1. I don't think it's suitable for playing alone. 2. The nuts that hold the spindle came undone easily on ours. Nelson thought it was a kibble dropping on the floor and we just managed to stop him from swallowing it. If I was in your situation, I would spend...

Who'd have dogs...! (Don't read if you're eating anything!)

The ones on the black bag look like boletus most of which are edible. We have loads in the garden\forest. Go to amazon and buy the Roger Phillips mushroom book if you are concerned.

Catch-up plan to get Nelson up to standard

We've also speculated on the reasons. I doubt it was boredom though, he loved retrieving then, and still does. Of course not. We strictly followed the instructions, and set off briskly in the opposite direction. Rinse and repeated for 30-60 minutes before calm recovery of the dog. We...

Catch-up plan to get Nelson up to standard

Yup, I've heard this many times and Bob said this too. If given the choice between: 1. Cooked chicken. 2. Cat food. 3. His favourite toy. 4. An owner rolling on the ground making squeeky noises. 5. Smells on the forest floor. He will nearly always choose number 5. Class Two Nelson watched...

Catch-up plan to get Nelson up to standard

I said, "I want and need to get Nelson through the basic hunting dog ability test and also get him ready for hunting season 2019." Maybe poor sentence construction on my part, but the "need" part relates to the basic hunting ability test (it is part of the sales contract I signed when I got...

Catch-up plan to get Nelson up to standard

I did :) And with good reasons. As with anything, I like to form my opinions and actions with information from multiple sources. No one person gets a monopoly on that, neither you or Bob :) I really appreciate you taking the time to pen key a comprehensive and interesting reply and I look...

Catch-up plan to get Nelson up to standard

In short, Nelson is not at the standard I had hoped for at 18 months of age. His walking skills are pretty good, and he will sit, stay, etc., without a problem. He can find and retrieve but the return can be flaky, and often he will run off to play with the dummy on his own. I want and need to...

    Too hot ?

Compared to Central Europe, I think we have it pretty good. Luckily we are up at 5am and get the big walk in then. +30 during the afternoon/evening is too much for the boy.

I think it's normal practice to require this (at least from the "professional" breeders, probably not required for mongrels).

    @Beanwood Here are some Stats for Finnish labs: https://jalostus.kennelliitto.fi/frmTerveystilastot.aspx?R=122&Lang=en e.g. from 2144 pups born in 2017, the scores for the 390 pups so far tested were: A - 218 B - 112 C - 44 D - 15 E - 1

@Beanwood Yes we pay for the x-rays (160€) and then again for them to be assessed by a Finnish Kennel Club vet to give their verdict & scores (45€). It sure brings some piece of mind and as all these are publicly listed on an internet database, it reflects well on the breeder. Not sure how...

We had Nelson x-rayed this summer too (it's part of the sales agreement with the breeder that the buyer gets x-rays done and also enters the dog in to the basic retriever ability test). Hips were A/A and elbows 0/0. So joints are OK but "head test" assessment is still "daft as a boot" :)
