    Horrible scare this morning

Oh that’s just so unlucky then that the stream was so much more dangerous that it looked!

    Training Thought for the Day

I think that there is a real lack of looking at the emotional response of the dog in training and just looking at the response in terms of rates of success. One of my dogs definitely finds shaping very frustrating and stressful and I always now lure or capture with him to reduce this. My...

    Horrible scare this morning

Oh I’m so sorry that you had such a horrible fright at Goliath Falls. I’m sure that Ruben will have forgotten about it completely by now and I think that a little fright when they can’t get back to you does them no harm, but thank goodness for your friend and his help! I had QUITE a discussion...

    Cassie's Gundog training log

I have done the first two tests. They cost around £40 each to do, so not a huge outlay. If you join the Gundog club which costs £14 to register your dog, then you get a copy of all the test grade requirements sent on joining. The first test is really easy and as long as you have a dog thats...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

This is from last week. His third session in the pool. We were trying to get him to walk into the water without any holding his jacket and I think you can see that he is quieter while swimming which is better. He is quite low in the water and this is because Becks tells me that he is hardly...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

He is making quite a lot of noise while he is swimming back which shows that he is finding it difficult but I have some better videos from his third session where is certainly happier

Bing conquers his fear of water!

I’ve had to set up a special YouTube so that I can show you these videos. I’m really pleased with Bing after the first session where he almost sat on Beck’s head trying to keep out of the water:oops: This is his second session where he was carried into the water and then decided to swim himself...

The ethics of positive reinforcement training

Oh I love this sort of discussion! I must state that I am truely behind positive training and use it but I do believe it has its limitations. I had watched the video clips before @snowbunny posted them and listened to the pod cast by Hannah Branigan and do feel quite cross with John Mcguigan...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

I didn’t really have need for him to swim as I had Diesel but I realised that being so scared around water would be a problem if he needed hydrotherapy at any point. I’m used to waiting with him while everyone else does their water retrieving but I discovered in that the grade 3 Gundog test...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

Two weeks ago she carried Bingley into the pool in a flotation jacket. He was very scared and when she got him to swim back to the ramp his eyes were bulging out of his head! I was not sure that we were really making things any better but interesting she was massaging him in the warm water...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

I have left him alone now for some time. I quickly gave up on a paddling pool in the garden as he didn’t go out side for a week after he realised it was there! I’ve been taking Diesel for hydrotherapy for some time and looking at their timetable board with the dogs names and their problems made...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

Sorry had to stop and deal with my houseful of people at home! While I accepted that Bing was never going to be that happy around water I was hoping that he would gradually over come his fears. I have tried treating him gradually for putting his feet in water but not had much success and have...

Bing conquers his fear of water!

I thought that I would write about Bing and the efforts we have made with him and water I case it was useful to anyone else. Bing tried to walk on a neighbors swimming pool bubble cover as a young dog while I was visiting their garden. One moment he was with me and playing with their pointer...

    Physio and rehab struggles

No Mr P and I were discussing whether we would go on to do this. We had his xrays sent to Fitzpatricks for a second opinion but that is as far as we’ve got.

    Physio and rehab struggles

I think I wrote my post because I have to accept that I have a damaged dog and it’s a difficult thing to come to terms with. You wonder how it happened and whether you did anything wrong that caused it. I’m sorry to hear of your problems. I really sympathise with your feelings about other...

    Physio and rehab struggles

Thank you Beanwood for your detailed reply. It’s helpful to know exactly how other people are coping with their dogs. I’m quite sad about Diesel as he is such an enthusiast - not sure that gentle Gundog work would play out with him. You’ve seen him - 100% at 100 miles an hour or nothing! I’ll...

    Physio and rehab struggles

Thank you @MellowYellow. It was your post about Merlin which prompted me to write. It’s such a struggle when they can’t understand why you are not engaging with them in the way they want. This is a dog that lives to retrieve and is so unhappy when he knows I’m doing it without him. We are very...

    Physio and rehab struggles

I keep thinking that he’s going to get better but shoulders are apparently very difficult to fix. I have done some scent work with Bingley but Diesels such an enthusiastic energetic dog I’m not sure that it would suit.
