I'm very impressed. That must be a huge challenge for any dog, let alone a youngster - I'm not sure that Harv would manage with all of those potential people to give him the love and affection that he thinks he deserves. :inlove:
The 'homework' is basically repeating the class exercises in a different environment. Confession - I perhaps don't do as much homework as I should! And @Mrs UB tells me as much! :headbang:
No need to feel like that, Jacqui. We are first time dog owners so have no accumulated wisdom when it comes to training. It's down to a desire to learn more on my part (which you clearly share by your presence and contributions here) and a willingness to 'give it a go'. Are there any trainers...
Sort of. It's not a permanent thing but there is a block of 6 classes so we have a few more to go yet (and we can always re-do the course if we think it would be beneficial).
So, today was Harv's first advanced gundog training class. I have to admit - I never thought that we would end up here (unless we went to watch somebody else's dog!). Almost regardless of how we do in these classes I'm so pleased with Harv for getting this far :)
Harv is always hugely excited...
Day 13 (2) done
I still struggle with humming, clapping, and counting in my head all at the same time! On the plus side Harv didn't struggle with any of his tasks. :)
Fear not! The instructor is very knowledgable and I'm sure you'll get some value from the 1:2:1. You can then discuss your concerns with her before doing any group sessions.
When Harv was around 6 months old we took him to some group training sessions with a lady gundog trainer near Evesham. I really liked the sessions and found them very informative. We also liked the fact that it was positive training having already 'experienced' some traditional training...
Hi Lisa and welcome.
Our energetic Lab, Hurricane Harv, has a Greyhound friend that he sometimes plays with - on sharp, twisting turns Harv has a slight edge but in a straight line, try as he might (and he does try!), he can't compete ;)
I agree with @Jacqui-S . Our dogs often continue training through these little niggles because of the excitement that they are feeling at the time - then it catches up with them later. Hopefully a good night's keep will sort him out.
Day 11 (2) done.
There was one sit, accompanied by a rather obvious sign of excitement!, but after we waited calmly for a few seconds he lay back down and was fine thereafter.
For some strange reason Harv really likes reversing
He'll often reverse in front of us in the house instead of walking normally and the dog-walker has told us how Harv likes to reverse through kissing gates when they are out.
At doggie gym the trainer wanted to see whether we could...
This was the approach that we took with Harv. It was basically an extension of the 'drop it' training that we did but instead of replacing the dropped item with something more desirable we simply gave the bone back again - immediately to start with and then gradually creating a delay. I would...
